The Dharma Jewel is the cessation of abandoning the afflictions to be abandoned, along with their seeds, which is Nirvana. Therefore, it is said that Nirvana itself is the Dharma Jewel. The Sangha Jewel, in general, does not deny that the four pairs and eight types of individuals are also considered Sangha. However, the Sangha that serves as a refuge is the path of truth of learning and non-learning in the minds of stream-enterers and others, and the realization of the path of truth of non-learning in the minds of Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and Arhats. This is the cause of becoming the Sangha Jewel. Therefore, the Sangha Jewel that serves as a refuge is identified as such. Thus, the Three Jewels that serve as a refuge are said to be like this, not the ordinary Three Jewels. For example, the physical body of the Buddha is the remainder of the truth of suffering, that is, the body of an ordinary being born from the karma of the former Prince Siddhartha. Therefore, it is not considered the Buddha Jewel that serves as a refuge. Similarly, the twelve divisions of scripture are not considered the Dharma Jewel that serves as a refuge. The bodies of the four pairs and eight types of individuals and the ordinary Sangha are also the remainder of the truth of suffering. Therefore, they are not considered the Sangha Jewel that serves as a refuge. Furthermore, according to the common view of the Mahayana, the "Seventy Verses on Refuge" by the venerable Chandrakirti states: "The Buddha possesses the three bodies, Nirvana, and the eight individuals." As it is said, the Buddha is the nature of possessing the three bodies, the Dharma is Nirvana, which is the cessation of Nirvana residing in the mindstream of the Buddha, and the Sangha is the eight individuals. In this context, it refers solely to the path of truth in the mindstream of the individuals. However, since the Mahayana Bodhisattvas are not placed in the Sangha, nor in the Dharma, nor in the Buddha, where should they be counted? The "Seventy Verses on Refuge" states: "In the Sutra spoken to Shariputra, Arhats pay homage to Bodhisattvas. These are not other than the Three Jewels, but are considered to belong to the Buddha." As it is said, in the Sutra spoken to Shariputra, Hearers, Solitary Buddhas, and Arhats also

Moreover, it is said that one should prostrate to the Bodhisattvas. Therefore, this is not another deity, but an object to which even Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Arhats should prostrate, so it belongs to the category of the Buddha deity. This is how the common refuge of the Mahayana is explained, the classification of the Three Jewels. Furthermore, the uncommon tenet of the Mahayana is: As stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga, the Buddha possesses two benefits and eight qualities, the Dharma possesses cessation and path and eight qualities, and the Sangha possesses wisdom, liberation, and eight qualities. First, the Buddha is said to possess two benefits and eight qualities, which is mainly established from the perspective of the Dharmakaya. Generally, in the Mahayana, it is not that the Nirmanakaya Buddha is not recognized as the Buddha, but here, in the uncommon refuge of the Mahayana, the Buddha, one of the Three Jewels, is mainly established from the perspective of the Dharmakaya. That is, as stated in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Not assembled nor naturally, Not realized by other causes, Possessing wisdom, compassion, and power, Is the Buddha with two benefits." It means that not assembled by causes and conditions, qualities naturally accomplished, not realized by other causes, these three are the perfect Dharma for oneself; wisdom, compassion, and power, these three are the perfect Dharma for others, totaling six. Such qualities of the ultimate two benefits, taking the classification of the two as the basis for classification, these eight are the possessors of two benefits and eight qualities, and if not counted in this way, it is acceptable to say that they possess six qualities. Here, the first reason for understanding it as the Dharmakaya is "not assembled," because it is said in the Ratnagotravibhāga: "Without beginning, middle, or end, Because it is self-nature, it is not assembled." It means that the Buddha is not assembled, because it is free from the three: beginning, middle, and end. The reason for being free from these three is that there is no birth in the beginning, no abiding in the middle, and no cessation in the end, so it is not assembled. Because possessing birth, abiding, and cessation is the characteristic of conditioned phenomena. Therefore, being free from birth, abiding, and cessation is non-assembled.
