The great physician remained silent for a moment, and then asked, "Brahmin, in which direction did you place it? At what time did you place it? Did anyone see you there? Did you tell anyone else?" The Brahmin told him everything that had happened. The great physician thought to himself, "That Brahmin woman must be in love with another man." To reassure the Brahmin, he said, "Do not be unhappy, and if it is not found, I will give you some of my wealth." He also asked, "Do you have a dog in your house?" The Brahmin replied, "Yes." "Then, when you return home, if all goes well, vow before the Lord to offer food to eight Brahmins. You invite four of the eight Brahmins yourself, and let your wife invite the other four." The Brahmin did as he was told. The great physician sent a man from his presence, instructing him, "When the Brahmins come, have this man stand at the door. Let the Brahmin woman give them the food, and do not let this man do anything, just have him stand before them." He also instructed that intelligent man, "When you bring the Brahmins inside, observe which one the dog barks at and which one it does not, whether it wags its tail or not, and keep this behavior of the dog in mind. When the Brahmin woman serves the food, pay attention to whom she casts glances, smiles at, and is especially attentive to, and be sure to note these things." The man did as the great physician instructed. When other Brahmins came, the dog would bark, but when the one with large ears came, the dog would lower its ears, wag its tail, follow him behind, and even make affectionate sounds after entering the house.
