Just as the earth endures all the rude and nonsensical talk without anger or displeasure, but rather bestows benefit, so he became patient. A yaksha, unable to bear him being tormented in this way, in order to test him, waited for that bull-king to leave with the monkey riding on him, and said, 'Hey, wait a moment! Did you buy this unruly monkey? Or did you lose in gambling? Or are you a little afraid? Or do you know that I have no power? Why do you carry it so contemptuously? Alas! Your horns can destroy even a mountain of stone, and when you kick in anger, you can destroy the top of a rock. Your body is hard and stable, and with your abundant strength and power, you can subdue even a lion. If you are kind to this monkey, whose nature is bad and cannot be reformed, it will only become more degraded. Crush it thoroughly with your hooves or horns!' The Bodhisattva spoke with gentle words, 'Knowing that this monkey is weak and always behaves dishonestly, I should be patient with it. To be patient with the weak and those who err is true patience. Therefore, I willingly endure the contempt of this weak monkey as much as I can, and I will not fall away from the practice of patience.' The yaksha said, 'If that is the case, you will never be free from the harm it does to you. Even if you cultivate patience towards the unruly, it will not give up harming you, but will hold on tightly.' The Bodhisattva said, 'I abide in patience and do not harm others. However, if I instruct it with skillful means, and if it does not listen, there are other lesser forms of patience, and it may be possible to turn it back from the wrong path. If such a person despises me, this self-centered person will also see the fault and will not do it again in the future, and I myself will be liberated from it.' Having said this, the yaksha was very pleased, struck his tambourine, and praised, 'Excellent!' Praising these animals as possessing such qualities, he then took the unruly monkey off its back, appointed it to guard him, and immediately disappeared. Furthermore, in the past, in a mountain near a remote monastery where many animals lived, there was a deer named Sharabha, who was powerful, swift, and possessed abundant mental strength.

Became one, living without harming others with a compassionate heart, subsisting only on grass, leaves, and water. Then, a king, along with his swift-shooting troops, came with four divisions of the army. The king, holding a bow and arrow, pursued the deer to demonstrate his archery skills. He rode a swift horse and galloped. The king of deer, seeing this, although capable of retaliating, did not, but quickly fled. There was a great canyon on the way, and the deer king jumped over it and escaped. When the king arrived, the horse could not jump, and as the king pulled the reins, he fell from the horse into the canyon. Then, as the Bodhisattva could not hear the sound of the horse's hooves, he looked back and saw the horse standing at the edge of the canyon without a rider, thinking that the king must have fallen into the canyon. Although the king had come to kill him, the Bodhisattva developed great compassion for him, thinking, 'This person once enjoyed the great wealth of royalty, but today has fallen into a great precipice and is experiencing unbearable suffering.' If even a remnant of life remains, he should not be abandoned. So the Bodhisattva looked over the edge of the cliff and saw the king with a broken head, covered in dust, struggling in agony. The Bodhisattva's eyes filled with tears, and he thought, 'Has the great king been injured? I am a deer living in your land. If you have nourished me with grass and water, please trust me, and if I can get you out, please tell me.' The king was very surprised and pleased, but also ashamed, wondering if this was true or false. 'I have treated you as an enemy, why do you show me compassion? Livestock and wild animals seem to belong to me. I am wearing thick clothes, so my body has not been greatly harmed, and even if there is a little harm, I can endure it. Compared to the suffering of falling into a cliff for making a mistake, the suffering of someone as virtuous as you is nothing. Please forgive my faults.' Then, the deer king Sharabha estimated the size of the stone, about the size of a person, and then estimated his own strength and warmth, entered the canyon, and respectfully said, 'Please ride on my back and hold on tightly.'

From there, it leaped upwards with force, pulling him up and showing him the way, then headed into the forest. The king embraced it and said, "In this forest of heat and cold, I cannot abandon you, my savior, and return home alone. Let us travel together." Sharabha said gently, "O King of Men, it is fitting that you delight in virtue. If you wish to repay me, then please have compassion for the assembly of ignorant beasts, like yourself, and those tormented by afflictions, and do not engage in the work of hunting from now on. All beings are the same, desiring happiness and not wanting suffering, so what I do not want, I should not inflict on others. Please abandon those sinful deeds that ruin fame and are condemned by the holy, and please expand again that merit of obtaining kingship, which is the source of wealth. We do not dwell in homes and are accustomed to the forest, so the joyful ways of life for animals and humans are different, therefore we will not go home. You return home, and with a mind to benefit yourself and others, abide in generosity and discipline, thereby attaining happiness, accumulating fame and merit," he advised. The king listened to his advice, respectfully looking back, and then departed from that grove. Again, in a great solitary forest, a place where various animals and beasts dwell, there was a deer named Ruru, who transformed into a golden, exceedingly beautiful form. With his sharp intellect, he avoided the places where hunters set traps and snares, and like a parent, he taught and protected the many deer who followed him. He saw a person being carried away by a strong river, crying out in distress, and he rescued him from the water. That person said to him, "My life was saved by you, how shall I repay you? Please command me." He said, "Do not tell anyone about me, that itself is repayment. Even though you may eat my flesh, there are others who covet my appearance. Therefore, you should protect my virtue, for indifference to a friend never brings happiness." That person also promised to do so, bowed, and left. One of the queens of the king of that country had a dream, and the diviners said that for a while it was a deer.

The king dreamed that a radiant guru was sitting on a throne, teaching the Dharma to the king and his retinue, and reported it to the king. In order to find him, the king said to the hunters, "Whoever hears of him will be given forty districts and extremely beautiful women." The previous man, desiring these, said to the king, "I have seen him." That man acted as a guide, and the king went in that direction with an army. The army surrounded the edge of the forest. That man and the king entered that forest from the road, and the man pointed out the deer to the king, whose mating act did not stop, and it fell to the ground. At that time, the king wanted to catch the deer, drew his bow and went forward, but the deer made a noise at the edge of the forest, and said in human language, "Sir, please dispel this doubt for a moment. Who told you that I live in this dense forest?" The king was surprised and pointed the arrow at the man. The Bodhisattva recognized him and described in detail the previous inappropriate behavior. The king asked the man if this was true, and the man, feeling ashamed, admitted it was true. The king angrily rebuked him and prepared to shoot an arrow, but the Bodhisattva stood in the middle and said, "Great King, what do you want to do by killing him? This one, driven by a great enemy, is already destroyed by a bad reputation. Because of lack of merit, he will also be destroyed in the next life. Please show compassion and forgive him. I will accept what you say with the crown of my head." The king praised the deer with respectful words and invited him to the palace. After listening to the deer's teachings, all the villagers, including the king, ministers, consorts, arose faith and practiced. All the deer and birds were given fearlessness. Also, in a previous life, when the Blessed One himself was born as a hermit named Caryagocara, the evil demon appeared in the form of five hundred men and transformed into a brave appearance, constantly following that hermit for five hundred years, scolding him day and night. Whether walking, sitting, sleeping, or in all activities, they would say unpleasant things, speaking harsh and evil words, but that hermit
