Moreover, there were no thieves or famines, no stones or gravel, and the trees of flowers and fruits flourished, raining in the rainy season, possessing food, cattle, and buffaloes. All were prosperous in happiness, relying on merit, always giving alms, abiding in fasting, and dwelling by taking vows. At that time, whoever died as a human in Jambudvipa, no matter what kind of death it was, they would depart from their bodies and be born among the gods, and most of them were born among the gods of the Four Great Kings. King Sonam Tob also placed countless sentient beings in the benefit of this life and the next, and after death, he was reborn in the Tushita Heaven together with tens of thousands of retinues. Thus, our teacher at that time and at that moment became the one called King Sonam Tob, and the parents of that time were also the present-day Śuddhodana and Mahamaya, the youth with form was the son of Su, the monk Gawa, the diligent one was the monk Drowa Shin Kye twenty kotis, the skillful one was the monk Magakpa, the wise one was the monk Sharibu, and the Indra of the gods at that time was the son of Mougal. The king who died and upon whose throne Sonam Tob ascended was the demon Sinister, the former poor man who entered the house of Sonam Tob was the monk Rāhula, the man without hands and feet whom Sonam Tob placed as before, the man who offered medicine and Dharma to the king was this Kaundinya. Therefore, in every way, this merit is beneficial, so no other equal and secluded (thing) to merit has been seen, so it was said. There, the monks asked the Buddha, what deeds did King Sonam Tob do that he became a king, etc., and all his wishes were fulfilled. The Blessed One said: In the past, a Tathagata named Invincible appeared in the world, performed the deeds of the Buddha, and after completely passing into Nirvana, a king built a stupa of the Buddha's relics, and the retinue gathered at the festival of that stupa.

In the midst of a gathering of countless people, a monk was teaching the Dharma in the afternoon. At that time, near the king's palace, there was a man named "Gambling Loser" who was very addicted to gambling. He had a wife named "Victorious Goddess" and a son named "Victor." Then, that gambler wore a single coarse cloth, carried an umbrella, a pair of shoes, and five copper coins. Except for these, everything he owned inside and outside the house had been lost in gambling. He was suffering from unbearable pain due to extreme poverty, and he sighed, "Alas, not accumulating merit, poverty is utterly unbearable!" He sighed deeply, put on his shoes, and carrying the five copper coins and the umbrella, he left the gambling place and eventually happily arrived at the place for listening to the Dharma, thinking, "Let me listen to what he is teaching." So, he put down the umbrella and shoes and listened respectfully. After a while, the Dharma speaker recited this verse: Accumulating merit leads to happiness. Therefore, people should do good. Do it again and again. One should aspire to it. Having heard this verse, he thought, "Accumulating merit leads to happiness, that is indeed so. The reason I am so destitute is also because I have not done good. I should do a little good." He thought about what he possessed, and besides the coarse cloth, the umbrella, the shoes, and the remaining five copper coins, he saw that everything else had been lost in gambling. He thought, "If I give away the five copper coins and the cloth, I will starve to death. If I don't give them away, I will go to the next world without merit and suffer the pain of poverty there as well. What way is there to avoid starving to death and also not being without merit?" He thought again, "Even if it is easy to die of starvation, going to the next world without merit is not right." So he thought, "I must give away these five copper coins and the cloth." As he was thinking this, the Dharma speaker recited this verse again: Doing good slowly, one becomes very fond of evil. Therefore, one should do good quickly, and also turn the mind away from evil. He said these words. Hearing these words, he thought, "Since it is said to do good quickly, then I will give it away immediately!" Lion

While the preacher was sitting on the Dharma seat, someone held an umbrella over him, and two shoes were placed at his feet. Those five Pandit guests kicked him with their feet, took off their monastic robes and covered the preacher's feet, expressing faith and reverence. They prostrated at his feet and prayed with strong faith: May I never become poor from now on because of giving, generating merit, generating Bodhicitta, and for the sake of the Dharma. May I be known for my merit in all lifetimes, and may gods and humans enthrone me as king, and may all my thoughts and wishes be fulfilled, just like obtaining them from the sky. May I also experience wonderful and extraordinary things at birth, and may inexhaustible treasures and various precious items also appear. The preacher also recited dedications, and everyone left. That gambler, wearing only one piece of cloth, thinking about the Dharma giving, returned to his home. His wife and son saw him and said: This person doesn't know where he squandered the monastic robes and ornaments, we two will also be squandered by him, let's go. He felt ashamed, thinking that it was because of the fault of poverty that he was scolded like this, so he said in verse: What suffering is more painful than poverty? What is more painful than poverty itself? The poor are like the dead, I am not a poverty of dying in the mud. After saying this, he sighed and sat without saying a word. After that, there was a well in the courtyard of that house, and the wife tied a bucket with a rope and lowered it to fetch water, wanting to lift the water up, but she couldn't lift it up. So she called her husband and said: Husband, please come and help me lift the bucket. The two of them couldn't lift it up either, so they called their son, and all three of them exerted great effort, even to the point of tearing their skin, and finally lifted the bucket up. When they looked, they saw five copper pots full of gold and silver hanging under the bucket. The gambler saw the result of giving in this life, was very happy, and said in verse: Alas! I have abandoned all faults, this is the field of the nature of merit. Now I have sown the seed, now the fruit

matured. When he said this, his wife asked, 'What are you thinking about when you say this?' He then explained the matter in detail. He saw the wonderful ripening of the fruits of merit in this life and was amazed. The story was passed from one person to another and spread throughout the king's palace and all its retinue. Many people were amazed. Then, the gambler suddenly became wealthy, and seeing the fruits of merit with abundant wealth, he honored the Three Jewels with great devotion. Every day he made great offerings to the stupa of the Thus-Gone One and listened to the Dharma. He also satisfied the monks appointed by the Sangha with good food every day. He also satisfied the ascetics, Brahmins, the poor, the sick, and other beggars with whatever wealth they desired. He also had a large monastery built, filled with all kinds of utensils, and offered it to the Sangha of monks from the four directions, so his fame spread everywhere. Later, when the king died without a son, the ministers and villagers, knowing that the gambler had great merit, made him king. From then on, the name of the gambler disappeared, and he became known as King Victorious. After that, King Victorious, having faith in merit, always gave alms without interruption and relied on merit. He took the precepts correctly and abided by them. The queen, ministers, towns, and villagers all abided correctly in merit. Later, when the king became subject to death, he was immediately born as the son of the King of the Gods of Others' Power, the Lord of Others' Power. A rain of heavenly jewels and garments fell from the sky, and the gods of Others' Power were greatly amazed. Thus, the one called the Gambler Victorious, by the merit of offering umbrellas and other things to the Dharma speaker, obtained five treasures in that very life, and also obtained the power of kingship. Due to the ripening of that karma, he obtained the power of kingship of the gods of Others' Power thirty-six times, and similarly, thirty-six times he obtained the power of kingship of the Joyful Gods.
