Above it, the gods of the Thirty-Three hung a curtain of divine garments. Some scattered jewels. Likewise, from each direction, clothes, flowers, ornaments, powdered incense, fragrances, garlands, and ointments were scattered. And various sounds of divine music were made. Through various actions, the entire city was made free of stones and gravel. Silk ribbons, victory banners, and flags were raised. Sprinkling with sandalwood water. Many incense burners were hung. Scattering various flowers, making it like the gardens of the gods. A hundred of the best elephants came out of the forest on their own and stayed in the elephant stables. A hundred mares also followed their foals. All the grains, without being plowed or sown, ripened with power. King Luminous Power, pleased, gave great generosity. After some time, as wealth greatly increased, they held a birth celebration for him and discussed what name to give him, and so he was named Merit Power. The youth Merit Power was entrusted to eight wet nurses and raised with good necessities of life. Growing rapidly like a lotus in a lake, and when he grew up, he was sent to study writing and eventually became proficient. He became proficient in the five sciences that royal families should master. That youth was also full of faith, virtuous, with good thoughts, engaged in benefiting himself and others, compassionate, magnanimous, and desirous of Dharma.

He is loving to all beings, delights in giving and generosity, gives completely and bestows everything, abiding in great generosity without attachment. Thus, to ascetics, Brahmins, and the poor and afflicted, he has not failed to give and completely bestow even his own flesh. When beggars come, he holds a loving heart towards them, looks to the sky, and thinks, 'If what is begged could come from the sky!' As soon as such a thought arises, it will come to pass, but no one knows this. Thus, he fulfills the wishes of all who beg with various items, and then they depart. His fame spreads throughout Jambudvipa, from the world of nagas below to the world of Brahma above, and his reputation resounds. Later, the youth Sonam Tob (Meritorious Power) went to the pleasure garden together with his four elder brothers. On the way, he saw pretas (hungry ghosts) with mouths as small as needles and bellies as large as Mount Meru, resembling skeletons, their bodies burning intensely, surrounded by thousands of pretas with joined palms. No one saw them except Sonam Tob. Those pretas said, 'Young one, you are renowned for your great power of merit and great compassion, please grant food and drink to us who are afflicted by hunger and thirst! Because we were under the control of miserliness, we were born as pretas, and for hundreds of years, we have not found even water, let alone food.' Thus they spoke. The youth, with compassion, looked to the sky, and when divine food and drink came, those pretas, due to the faults of their past deeds, did not see it and said, 'How can we not be satisfied?' The youth said, 'If these divine foods and drinks are given, what harm is there in not eating them?' The pretas said, 'Due to our past misdeeds, we do not see those divine foods and drinks.' Then the youth thought, 'Alas, the nature of miserliness is terrible!' And with a heart filled with loving-kindness towards them, he said, 'If I have the power of merit, by this truth and true words, may these pretas be able to see and eat these divine foods as they truly are!' As soon as he spoke, they saw the food, and their mouths returned to normal.

Then, one with good looks said: "What is there to investigate in this? This is the only realization in the world, that good looks are what people lack the most. Why? Because seeing someone with good looks, many people who have not seen them before will be very happy, and those who are unhappy will become happy again. The former sages also said that good looks are half of all gains. Furthermore, look at this: people are happy to see someone with a pleasing appearance, and they respect them from the heart as if they were the sacred Dharma." Hearing this, a diligent person said: "What is the use of good looks? Only diligence is what people lack the most. Why? Because even if one has good looks but no diligence, one will not see any desired results in this life or the next. Saying that good looks are what people lack is only misleading to foolish people. Through diligence, in this life one can obtain the profits of agriculture and commerce, the livelihood of servants, the understanding of treatises by noble people, and the fruits of meditation by meditators, etc., which are the desired results of this life; and in the next life, one can obtain good rebirths, great enjoyment, and liberation, etc., which are the results of the next life. The mind is not pleased. Why is that? Because without skill, diligence has never been seen to accomplish any fruit. Because with skill, it is seen to have fruit. Therefore, those with skill are lacking among people. Even if a craftsman is of low birth, they are respected by kings and others. Those skilled in various works are well-respected by gods and humans, so it was said. The wise one smiled for a moment and said: Not only wisdom, but also people's appearance, diligence, and skill are not lacking. Furthermore, through wisdom, one can obtain appearance and skill, and diligence can also obtain wealth. The good and happy aspects of people, through wisdom, one can obtain everything. When this was said, the youth endowed with the power of merit smiled and said: How can it be that without wisdom, appearance, skill, and diligence are not all lacking, and that which is fully grasped by wisdom is fruitful and not lacking is true, but that wisdom cannot be obtained without merit. Therefore, only merit is lacking among people. What is called merit is: the chief of uniquely beautiful fruits, and the fruits of poverty, joy, desirability, and agreeableness. All qualities cannot be fully expressed, but for the sake of your understanding, I will express a portion. Through merits, one obtains appearance. Through merit, one possesses morality. Through merits, one obtains glory, and likewise becomes one who has enjoyment. Through merits, one obtains wisdom. And so forth, praises are spoken. However, each holds to their own side and does not accept others. Then, the power of merit said: Alas, let us quickly go to another country and, if we dress inconspicuously, we will know what is lacking in appearance, diligence, skill, wisdom, and merit. Then those youths said, 'Let us do that,' and without asking their father, they unhesitatingly went to a very distant foreign kingdom and other places, entered the king's palace and other retinues, and dressed inconspicuously. The one with appearance, if seen, would be drawn in by delight.
