However, in the process of accomplishing this, there are countless deaths. Life does not stay, like the flow of a river or the burning of incense. As it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Without stopping day and night, this life is constantly diminishing, and there is no addition from elsewhere. Why should we not die?" At the time of death, relatives, wealth, the body, and other cherished things cannot accompany us; we must part quickly. As it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "Having to die abandoning everything, if I have not known this..." and so on. Therefore, death is certain, but when we will die is uncertain. When death comes, there is no way to escape it. The old cannot avoid death, the young cannot delay it, and the strong cannot prevent it. Whether the body is strong or weak, it cannot transcend the bounds of death. As the great scholar Hero said: "Even the bodies of the Buddhas, adorned with marks and signs, are impermanent. What need is there to mention beings with bodies like the pith of water and trees?" Accumulated wealth cannot avert death either. Again, as it says in that same text: "Having obtained much wealth, and enjoyed happiness for a long time, one goes away naked and empty-handed, just as if robbed by thieves." Therefore, one's own body cannot avert death either. As it says in the *Bodhicharyavatara*: "This body, nourished by food and drink, achieved with much joy, will not accompany oneself but will be eaten by dogs, or burned by a blazing fire, or rot in water, or be buried in the ground." Thus, it is uncertain when death will come. As it says in the sutra: "The next life and tomorrow, it is impossible to know which will come first. Do not strive for the affairs of tomorrow, but strive for the sake of the next life." Now the body is so strong, the complexion so radiant, the feeling so pleasant, and one does not keep death in mind at all. Like today, once struck by the Lord of Death, the body's strength is lost, and one cannot even sit up. The complexion fades, becoming dull and lifeless. The feeling is only suffering, and there is no way to endure the sickness, no way to bear the pain. Medicine and treatment are ineffective, and rituals and offerings are of no help. One knows one is going to die, but there is nothing one can do. Surrounded by the last of one's relatives, one cannot eat.

The last syllable is "za"! The end of speech is "zlo"! Then the breath ceases, and from this day forward, no matter how cherished and indispensable to the household, the corpse should not be kept in the house for long. It should be bound with ropes and carried out on a frame. Some touch the corpse as if making offerings; some weep and stagger; some faint. Others say, "This is earth! This is stone! Don't do that, you fool!" Saying this, they cross the threshold, never to return, and take it to the cemetery. There, it is eaten by worms, or by dogs, jackals, and the like, the bones scattered, the hair strewn about, the skull carried away by crows. Seeing the desolate and terrifying scene, people will say, "So-and-so is dead! There's a corpse here!" And then they will talk about other things. The sutra says, "I will die without being eaten by demons, and after death, I will become the subject of others' talk." So it is said. Dying like this is not enough; one's actions follow. The accumulated wealth, fields, houses, wives, and so on are enjoyed by others. The sins and non-virtues accumulated for their sake also follow. The advice to the king says, "When the time comes and the king departs, the objects of enjoyment and relatives do not follow. Wherever that person stays, wherever he goes, karma follows like a shadow." The sutra also says, "The body is destined to become terrifying, but the mind is involuntarily led by karma." That is to say, the fruits of white and black karma are never wasted; they will surely ripen. The Hundred Karmas says: "The karmas of sentient beings, even after a hundred eons, will not be lost. When the conditions gather and the time is ripe, they will manifest as their fruit." So it is said. The classification of karmic results is: the cause and effect of non-meritorious actions, the karmic results of meritorious actions, and the results of unwavering actions. The first is, in general, many, but in brief, the paths of karma are the ten non-virtuous actions: three through the body, such as killing; four through speech, such as lying; and three through the mind, such as covetousness. Each of these has three aspects: classification, result, and characteristics, which should be understood in detail.
