First, this precious human body of leisure and fortune is extremely difficult to obtain. As Shantideva said: \"This leisure is extremely difficult to obtain; having obtained it, one can accomplish benefit. If one does not accomplish benefit in this life, how will one obtain such a body again later?\" As for the eight leisures, it is said in the Compendium: \"Having abandoned the eight unfree states, one finds leisure to contemplate.\" In the Sutra on the Establishment of Mindfulness, it is said: \"Hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals; barbarians, long-lived gods, and those with wrong views; those in worlds without Buddhas, and the mute—these are the eight unfree states.\" How are these unfree? Hell beings are constantly in a state of suffering; hungry ghosts are constantly tormented by thirst; animals are generally very ignorant; and all three lack shame and embarrassment, so their minds are untamed, and they have no opportunity to practice the Dharma. The long-lived gods are attached to the pleasures of their abodes and have no time to strive for virtue. Thus, it is said that beings in the six realms have no leisure. Even if one is born as a human, barbarians are prevented from meeting noble beings. Those with wrong views do not see virtue as the cause of higher realms and liberation. Being born in a world without a Buddha means there is no one to show what should and should not be done. The mute cannot understand for themselves the Dharma of what is well-spoken and what is poorly spoken. Thus, being free from these eight is called having leisure and fortune. Fortune consists of five personal fortunes and five other fortunes, making ten in total. The five personal fortunes are as follows: \"Having a human body, being born in the central lands, having complete faculties, not having reversed karma, and having faith in the source.\"" } ] ============================================================
