, that itself is the vajra of definitive meaning. That vajra itself transforms into three through the divisions of temporary states: impure, impure-pure, and utterly pure, in that order. These are referred to as sentient beings, bodhisattvas, and tathāgatas. As it is said, beings are referred to as sentient beings in the state of saṃsāra, which is impure due to adventitious stains, and that realm is also called the lineage or element, the tathāgatagarbha. In the state of possessing both purity and impurity, it is referred to as a person who has entered the path, and from the aspect of the realm's cessation, it transforms into the Dharma and the Saṅgha. For example, the Saṅgha is merely the cessation of the wisdom of the path of seeing, the path is from the aspect of the path of uninterruptedness, and the truth of cessation is from the aspect of the special path of liberation. In the state of the utterly pure Buddha, it is referred to as the Sugata, etc., and that realm is also called the Dharmakāya. If divided by cessation, it is threefold: enlightenment, qualities, and activities. Therefore, it is also said that there are seven vajra states according to the internal divisions, and it is extremely important to realize that all the definitive meanings of the latter two wheels are gathered there. So, how does the definitive meaning of the first, the selflessness of persons, gather? The three—what is to be purified, what purifies, and the result of purification—of the inferior path all gather into the thusness that possesses stains. Therefore, having understood that the main subject taught by this treatise is the manner of the tathāgatagarbha, and that all the definitive meanings of the three wheels gather there, if you wonder what that essence is, generally in the scriptures, it is spoken of as the emptiness free from elaboration, the luminosity of the nature of mind, the ālaya-vijñāna, and the bodhisattva or sentient being—four aspects. And in this very text, the three own-characteristics—Dharmakāya, thusness, and lineage—and the general characteristic, non-conceptualization, and four meanings are explained. These are also expressions spoken with consideration of the three states mentioned above, and the provisional and definitive meanings. If you wonder from where these are taught and by whom they are especially elucidated, freedom from elaboration is the definitive meaning of the middle wheel and above, and the noble Nāgārjuna and his followers clarified it with many doors of scripture and reasoning. However,

The basis for terms like emptiness and self-nature is explained in the Madhyamaka collections of reason, and most Indian teachers of Prasangika and Svatantrika agree that it is found through the power of reason as a negation that is a non-affirming negative (prasajyapratiṣedha). Tibetan proponents of rangtong Madhyamaka strongly assert that it is solely a non-affirming negative. Regarding such emptiness, Lekden Shepai (Śrīmānkīrti) says in the Tarka 'bar that it is the Tathāgatagarbha, and Chandrakirti also implicitly agrees. Vimuktisena and Simhabhadra say that the emptiness of non-affirming negation is the gotra and svābhāvikakāya, and Yeshe Nyingpo also says it is the dharmakāya, thus implicitly agreeing that it is the essence. However, the emptiness of non-affirming negation found by inference is said to be a great disease for bodhisattvas, because it itself becomes a great bondage of conceptualization. Therefore, it is especially superior in the final turning of the wheel by means of engaging in non-conceptualization. The luminous nature of the mind is clearly stated in the middle and final turnings of the wheel and in the tantras. Moreover, the Uttaratantra, the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, Nagarjuna's Dharmadhātustava, the Cittavajrastava, the Bodhicitta-vyākhyāna, etc., clearly and extensively explain that this is the essence. The explanation of the kunzhi alaya-vijñana as the Sugatagarbha appears frequently in the Lankavatara Sutra, the Śrīmālādevīsiṃhanāda Sūtra, the Ghanavyūha Sutra, the Vajraguhya and so on, and the Cittamatra teachers literally accept it. The explanation of sentient beings as the essence is found in the Lamp Illuminating Darkness: "All sentient beings are the Tathāgatagarbha." And in this very text it says: "The element is in three states, it is indicated by three names." Etc. Although the meanings spoken in this text will be explained in detail below, here I will mention them briefly: "Because the Buddha's wisdom enters the assembly of sentient beings, the stainless nature is non-dual, because the Buddha lineage is closely connected to it, it is said that all beings have the Tathāgatagarbha." Because the Buddha's wisdom enters all the assemblies of sentient beings, the Buddha's wisdom that enters sentient beings is called the Tathāgatagarbha, and the nature of the mind is without adventitious defilements.
