Some say that the superior obtain realization, the middling obtain experience, and the inferior obtain firm understanding, but understanding alone is not enough. For these individuals, even if they are skilled in explanation but have not generated experience, or even if they have experience but are not skilled in explanation, the lama should strictly discipline them and skillfully guide them by pointing out the direction, and be skilled in asking questions. Even if a good experience has arisen, do not lose the opportunity to introduce it due to impatience; be cautious. Let them experience it for a while. Some alternate between the instructions and introduction of vipassanā (lhag mthong), and some observe during the introduction, various situations arise. In these situations, make a decision through analysis, generate experience, and then introduce the experience during the introduction, and have them meditate, that is the best. In any case, if experience has not arisen, let them cultivate that śamatha (zhi gnas) itself, allowing clarity and awareness to arise, and if you guide in this way, you will accomplish the meaning, thereby stabilizing the experience. Secondly, the order of introduction is divided into two: the actual introduction of coemergent (lhan skyes), and eliminating faults and identifying meditation. The first is divided into three: introducing the coemergent mind-essence, introducing the coemergent conceptual thought, and introducing the coemergent appearance. The first is: At the time of introduction, do not leave anyone other than the lama and the disciple nearby; if they wish, let them do all the key points as before. When your mind is left uncorrected in its own state, all subtle conceptual thoughts subside into their own place, and mind-essence abides in its own state, is it so? Remain still and look. That is called śamatha (zhi gnas). In that state, without falling into dullness, non-conceptuality, or distraction, without being able to say in words that the nature of mind is like this, without being able to think with the mind, free from all grasping, is it clear or dull, self-aware knowing of one's own awareness, like being clear and transparent? Is there something like an experience that cannot be experienced? Observe in the state of samadhi. That is called vipassanā (lhag mthong). Although here śamatha (zhi gnas) is mentioned before vipassanā (lhag mthong), in reality there is no difference between śamatha (zhi gnas) and vipassanā (lhag mthong); does śamatha (zhi gnas) also abide in the ungrasping, self-knowing, self-luminous vipassanā (lhag mthong)? Does vipassanā (lhag mthong) also abide in the śamatha (zhi gnas) that abides in its own state and is not stained by the characteristics of conceptual thought?

In a state of equanimity, let them observe. This is called the union of calm and insight. Both are complete in a single moment of mind. Experiencing and recognizing this is called arising meditation. This is the intention of the Buddha, the mind-essence of sentient beings, the unborn Dharmakaya, the nature of reality, the innate mind, the primordial wisdom, Mahamudra, etc., with many names. All Sutras, Tantras, Shastras, and pure instructions converge and flow into this. Having said that, if desired, one can also quote sources to establish certainty. Otherwise, for now, saying too much might confuse those with simple minds, so it is not necessary. In short, let the mind rest naturally, thoughts dissolve on their own, and in that state of self-aware, self-luminous, innate mind, abide single-pointedly without distraction. During the activities of walking, sitting, and lying down in between sessions, also try as much as possible not to be distracted from remembering it, and it is very important to meditate consistently for several days. Otherwise, this face of mind that has been sought through various methods may be lost, so restrain them and have them meditate for several days. Secondly, as before, have them adjust their posture in front. Let your mind rest naturally, thoughts subside, and from that state of clear, empty, naked mind, gaze intently without distraction at its essence. Also, when thoughts like joy and happiness arise strongly, let them arise as they are, and gaze at their essence in a state of clarity and emptiness. Then, does that thought also appear nakedly in a state of clear emptiness without clinging? Does it exist there without difference from the essence of the innate mind? Let them observe like this for a while. Even if they say it is in a state of clear emptiness, without difference, ask: Is it in a state of clear emptiness after the thought has disappeared, or is it in a state of clear emptiness by pulling the thought back into meditation, or is the thought itself in a state of clear emptiness? If they say it is like the first two situations, then it means that the superimposition has not been cut off before, so have them make a firm resolution to persist for several days. If they experience that it is not like the first two situations, but like the latter situation, then it means that they have seen the essence of the thought, so introduce it by saying: Because you have looked at the essence of the thought, the thought does not need to disappear, nor does it need to be pulled back into meditation, the thought itself is clear emptiness without clinging.
