Yes, the body posture is as before, with the gaze directed straight ahead. Arouse vigor and concentrate without a moment's distraction. Without any meditation object, single-pointedly remain clear and aware. After a short while, release and again concentrate tightly, remaining focused without a moment's distraction. Practice and observe. If, compared to the previous state of equanimity, the mind becomes clearer, remains clear and aware, and there is awareness, then there is progress. For some with restless minds, even if some clarity arises but the duration is short, do not consider it a fault. By doing many short sessions, the clarity of the abiding will gradually increase. The second method is: body posture and gaze as before. Without preferences such as "this is meditation, that is not meditation," or "happy when abiding, unhappy when distracted," relax the mind. Without any acceptance or rejection, let the mind naturally relax. In this state, maintain a non-dull awareness, cultivating with a vast and spacious mind. Now, as you cultivate, if coarse thoughts arise like sesame seeds, neither block them nor follow them. Maintain your own non-distracted awareness. Do not accept or reject subtle, fleeting movements either. Rest a little in the clear, lucid state and during moments of relaxation. Then, continue to cultivate and observe as before. If, as before, you try to block subtle and coarse thoughts and artificially adjust awareness to a clear and lucid state, as if needing to concentrate single-pointedly, it will feel somewhat uncomfortable. Here, it is sufficient to cultivate naturally in a non-distracted state. Even if subtle and coarse thoughts arise, as long as you maintain awareness, the thoughts cannot function and will naturally subside and merge into the state of abiding. If awareness pervades, there is no need for other preferences, and a sense of spaciousness will arise. During moments of relaxation, the mind also relaxes. If you recognize the weaknesses of the abiding and cultivate them, that is progress. If you fall into a state of distraction, like sinking downwards, or become numb and lose awareness due to anything, then the awareness is weak. If the state of abiding becomes tense, rigid, or chaotic, then the relaxation is insufficient and the awareness is dull. Therefore, use the method of cultivation to eliminate the faults and continue to cultivate.

If the mind is dull, generate the sharpness and power of awareness. If it is agitated, slightly subdue the sharpness of the mind, greatly relax and soothe it, so that the mind abides clearly and purely. If the appearances of forms, sounds, etc., also appear as vague, silent, gone, and empty, then stillness has arisen. Whatever specific experiences arise, do not follow them, but allow yourself to meditate for a while in a clear, pure, and non-conceptual state. If you do not gain a foothold here, your meditation will be inconsistent, so you must gain a foothold. First, finding a small amount of abiding in non-conceptuality amidst the turmoil of many subtle and gross thoughts is the first level of calm abiding, like a stream flowing through a ravine. Then, most of the thoughts gradually subside, and calm abiding is comfortable and peaceful. However, if a strong movement of thoughts arises, it cannot be suppressed, and scattering occurs from time to time. This is the intermediate level of calm abiding, like a slow-moving river. Then, subtle and gross thoughts do not arise, and one can abide in a non-conceptual state for as long as one feels comfortable. Or, even if a subtle thought arises slightly, it cannot perform the function of thinking, but is naturally purified in its own place in a non-conceptual state. This is the ultimate calm abiding, like the meeting of mother and child in the ocean. Therefore, even if this calm abiding does not fully understand the essence of Mahamudra meditation, it is very important as the basis of meditation, and it is an immeasurable meditation for accumulating virtuous deeds, so one should strive to accomplish flawless and stable calm abiding. Second, guiding through the door of insight, there are two: determining the nature of various mind appearances, and cutting off the imputations on the basis. The first has two parts: determining the nature of the root mind, and determining the nature of the function, thoughts, and appearances. The first is: the body posture is as before, the eyes are half-open and half-closed, remain unchanged, and gaze intently. Place awareness clearly and purely on top of non-conceptual calm abiding, and in this state, look nakedly at the mind itself. What kind of shape and color does it have? Where does it reside and what does it depend on? What are its appearance and changes? Examine and analyze them in order. Is it round, square, or other shapes, or is it the shape of earth, stone, mountains, rocks, plants, etc., or is it the shape of humans and animals, etc.? Is it white, black, or other colors?
