Entering the gate (of practice). Meeting a lama, a virtuous spiritual friend, and having all the conducive conditions for practicing the Dharma, being able to make practice the core essence, is more meaningful than finding a wish-fulfilling jewel. However, if one is only for the sake of this life, pursuing the reputation of being learned, disciplined, virtuous, accomplished, and famous, harboring only a superficial desire in one's heart, and being content with just spending a few years in a retreat place, without pure intention and proper practice, one will deceive the patrons who provide support, and the practitioner themselves will deviate from the vision of lifetimes, and so on, the faults are beyond imagination. Therefore, from the very beginning, one must have the pure intention to practice liberation and enlightenment for the benefit of others, for the sake of future lives and beyond, and for the sake of the Dharma, one must engage in diligent asceticism, with unwavering perseverance and fierce effort, not only for three years, but also integrate life and practice, following the biographies of the Kagyu lineage's previous masters, and engage in pure practice. Whether one can do this or not, one must carefully think, observe, and analyze oneself. Only then can one truly enter practice. If one enters practice blindly without careful consideration, just listening to others' empty words, one will ultimately gain nothing, so it should be avoided. After that, if one is certain and determined to enter practice, The initial intention is like planting a seed, just as wheat, barley, buckwheat, and beans each mature into different branches, leaves, and fruits, so one must have an immaculate and pure intention. In this regard, Jamgon Lodro Thaye himself said: Initially, the aspiration does not go astray, which is a good foundation; in the middle, one truly practices the view, meditation, and conduct to be practiced, pleasing others; in the end, the fruit of practice is not wasted, and one's own mind feels at ease, which is the general summary of the precepts. As it is said. So, how can the initial aspiration not go astray? The Sutra of the Heap of Jewels says: Light Protector, if some monks want to go to a solitary place, they should keep eight dharmas in mind. Which eight? Thinking that one should completely abandon one's body, this is the first; thinking that one should completely abandon one's life, this is the second; thinking that one should abandon all reverence, this is the third; thinking that one should abandon all attachment and desire, this is the fourth; (thinking that one should go to) a solitary place

5. Thinking, "I should live in solitude like a deer;" 6. Thinking, "I should learn all the practices of living in solitude;" 7. Living by the Dharma; 8. Thinking, "I should not live by afflictions." These are called the eight dharmas. Bhikshus, you should dwell in solitude, contemplating whatever you wish in your mind. Thus it is said. In short, one must abandon all worldly affairs and engage in practice with the aspiration to attain unsurpassed great enlightenment. The Dharma Lord Jigten Sumgon (འཇིག་རྟེན་གསུམ་མགོན, 1143-1217) said: All dependent arising relies on the mind of enlightenment, therefore one must be very careful. If one goes to the mountains, one must have a mind of enlightenment unmixed with other thoughts. If one goes to the mountains because of friends or belittling others, then nothing one wishes will succeed. Like a dog drinking water, one will only become worse. If one goes to the mountains being controlled by others, or with thoughts of food, wealth, and desires, then one's own vows will be lost, and one will cause others to accumulate negative karma and lose faith. If one goes to the mountains with hatred, then everything will hate oneself, and one will suffer slander and so on. If one goes to the mountains with pride, then qualities will not arise in one's own mindstream. If one goes to the mountains with attachment to food and clothing, then one will suffer from lack of food and clothing, and one will lose everything one has. If one goes to the mountains with the thought of only satisfying one's own desires, then it is like the Hearer Vehicle, and one will not benefit others. If one does not understand the causes and faults of these factors, and goes to the mountains out of ignorance, then virtuous practice will not increase, there will be no accomplishment, and one will gain nothing. If this is not the case, then ask for a method. Oh, you have great power, but I always preach the benefits of the mind of enlightenment in the assembly. If one goes to the mountains with love, then all disharmony will be pacified, and everywhere will be auspicious. If one goes to the mountains with compassion, then one will benefit others. If one goes to the mountains with joy, then one will gain the delight of gods, demons, and humans. If one goes to the mountains with equanimity, then phenomena will be controlled. If one goes to the mountains with the four immeasurables, then the four activities will accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. Furthermore, if one goes to the mountains with devotion to the yidam deity, then one will attain common siddhis. If one goes to the mountains with devotion to the lama, then
