means. Adornment is like an ornament, which brings joy. For example, natural adornment, a beautiful appearance, adorned with bracelets and the like, appears in a mirror, and seeing it brings joy. Like the beautiful form of the Mother Sutra, adorned with the eight objects and seventy meanings, appearing in the mirror of the treatise, it brings supreme joy to the wise, so it is an adornment. As it is said, "The adornment of form, endowed with inherent qualities, enters the mirror." "Called" is the proclamation of the name, meaning it is called that. Second, the Prajnaparamita and Abhisamayalankara are named according to what is to be explained. The three, Upadesha, Shastra, and Alankara, are named according to their function. The verses are named according to what can be explained. Third, there are two necessities for mentioning both Sanskrit and Tibetan at the beginning. The first two are: to establish the authenticity of the treatise, and to leave an impression on the Sanskrit language. The second two are: to easily understand the general content of the treatise, and to understand the terminology. The third two are: to know the subtle translation, and to express gratitude to the translators. Second: Because the obscurations of ignorance and its habits are purified, and the wisdom of knowing increases with respect to the knowable, one becomes a Buddha. In the "Seventy Verses on Refuge," it says, "Awakening from the sleep of ignorance, and also increasing wisdom with respect to the knowable, blooming like a lotus, therefore it is called Buddha." "And" is a جمع (collection). Because one has realized the meaning of the two selflessnesses, the two benefits, and all omniscience, and has obtained the inexhaustible sign of Nirvana, and has understood the methods of taming those to be tamed, one is a Bodhisattva. In the Ornament, it says, "Realizing the goodness of that, realizing the great benefit, realizing all meanings, and constantly realizing, understanding the differences of various methods, therefore it is called a Bodhisattva." I prostrate to all of these. By whom is the prostration done? By the translator. Second, the meaning of the excellent treatise of the author includes: the introductory branch of the Prajnaparamita to be explained—the offering and praise; the introductory branch of the treatise to be explained—the necessity and connection; and the explanation of the Abhisamayalankara to be explained in the treatise. First, in general, the praise is for the three wisdoms.

Homage to the Excellent Mother of the Buddhas! First, praise of the Ground Wisdom, the Path Wisdom, and the All-Knowing. First, praise of the one who leads. Who is the leader? The Shravakas. Why are they called Shravakas? Because among the three types of beings, their nature is dull, so even in their last existence, they listen to the Dharma with sound and proclaim what they have heard to others, hence the name. As it says in the Bodhisattva Pitaka: "The Shravakas go forth for liberation because of sound." Therefore, there is little difference between them and the Mahayana, so even the Pratyekabuddhas, who do not rely on others' teachings in their last existence, are included. Their intention is to seek and desire peace for themselves, which is the peace of the cause, afflictions, and the result, suffering. In terms of classification, there are those who accept the view and those who are emanated Shravakas. The former refers to the Svatantrikas. The latter refers to Shariputra and others who adopted the conduct of Shravakas for the benefit of others. They are nominal Shravakas because they proclaim the Dharma after hearing it, just like Shravakas. As it says in the White Lotus Sutra: "Lord, today we have become Shravakas, and we will also proclaim the excellent Bodhi, and we will also praise the sound of Bodhi, therefore we are like inexhaustible Shravakas." The need is to guide those of inferior intellect, as it says in the Sutra: "The Great Vehicle is frightening, knowing that sentient beings delight in inferiority, these Bodhisattvas become Shravakas, and also show themselves as Pratyekabuddhas." In another Sutra, it says that this is harmful to those who have been prophesied to become Buddhas and have been declared to be Bodhisattvas. By what means? By knowing that all internal and external phenomena are without self, with skillful means. The word "ཉིད་(nyid)(nyid, svayam, svayam, 自身)" here is the cause of things, not a definitive word. Where does it lead? In the cessation of afflictions with remainder and the cessation of suffering without remainder. Therefore, leading the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas to cessation is the result of knowing all skillful means, because there is following and reversing. Following is: if this exists, then the clinging to self and what belongs to self, both internal and external, will cease; if this ceases, then the three poisons and the karma that propels one into samsara, which is caused by the three poisons, will cease; if this ceases, then the result, suffering, will also cease. As it says in the Jewel Box Sutra: "Always the three realms are without reality, without real things.
