Firstly, between desiring the supreme accomplishment of Mahamudra and merely desiring to be saved from the fears of this life and to attain the rank of gods and humans in the next life, the former is for those fortunate ones who have cultivated their minds in the Great Vehicle from countless lifetimes. Therefore, there is no need to establish the foundations of the path; one should begin with the ripening empowerment and rely solely on the path. In this regard, it is also said in the Ornament of Realization: Tree that before the empowerment, one should practice the ritual of generating the mind of enlightenment. The latter is for those of lesser capacity who enter gradually. Therefore, one should begin with the faults of samsara and teach all the foundations of the path up to the point of arousing joy in the Secret Mantra. Secondly, even among those who enter the teachings in this life, there are those who enter the path of the Hearers and those who enter the path of the Great Vehicle of the Perfections. For the former, abandon the instructions on impure appearances and teach the three: loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment. When joy in the Secret Mantra arises, one should introduce them to the Mantra path. For the latter, also abandon the instructions on the appearances of experience. If there is joy in the Secret Mantra, one should teach from the ripening empowerment onwards. If there is no joy, one should arouse joy in the Secret Mantra with phrases such as, Child, return to the Great Vehicle! and then bestow the Mantra Vehicle. This is what Jetsun Tsemö said. Fifthly, one might think, How is it that this contradicts the way other holy ones lead, first leading with the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment and impermanence and death? The reason why such things appear in the instructions of the Kadampa is that they refer to the order in which a single individual is led by the paths of the three types of persons. The small person is one who turns away from this life and seeks the rank of gods and humans in the next life. For this, one must turn away from this life with the difficulty of finding leisure and endowment and impermanence and death. The intermediate person is one who, after that, abandons all of samsara and seeks only nirvana. For this, one must generate the intention to abandon samsara with faith in the faults of samsara and karma and its results. The great person is one who abandons attachment to self-interest and desires unsurpassed enlightenment for the sake of sentient beings. For this, one must generate the mind of the Great Vehicle with the three: loving-kindness, compassion, and the mind of enlightenment. Therefore, this is what is meant.

So, when three individuals are guided separately by the path of three types of persons, there is a sequence of inferior, intermediate, and superior. Such a sequence also exists in the common aspects of this system, namely, the Pratimoksha vow is the way to guide the lesser person, the ten objects of training are the way to guide the intermediate person, and the two, Bodhicitta and view, are the way to guide the great person, so it is also present here. This lineage's system of the four attachments being severed also has this sequence. In this context of uncommon oral instructions, initially guiding from the faults of Samsara is because entering into the actual mantra vows requires the great vehicle's Bodhicitta to precede it, and that also requires the Pratimoksha vow to precede it. That requires initially having the thought of renunciation, because for the way of guiding those of lesser capacity entering gradually, these are indispensable Dharmas, so it is in this regard. The difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowment and impermanence of death are necessary to reverse attachment to this life if it arises, but not necessary for others, so in the main structure of the instructions, it is explained under the faults of Samsara. The clear answer states: Even if you think that way, if you are attached to this life, then impermanence should be repeatedly remembered in all sessions, and if you do not constantly think about it, it will become unnecessary as time passes. That is what was said. Such a sequence also exists in other treatises, for example, each of the seven fundamental laws has three aspects: fear protection, good wishes, and Pratimoksha. Among them, in the treatises of Yuan and Shakya, only Pratimoksha is explained, so at the beginning of the treatise, it is necessarily based on the discipline of renunciation, because there is a saying: "Abandoning suffering with the discipline of renunciation." Also, in the Ornament for Clear Realization, when a single individual is gradually led to non-abiding Nirvana by the twenty-seven activities of the Dharmakaya, there is also an example of initially proclaiming the thought of renunciation, such as "Beings and the work of peace." Sixth, then, one might think, since it was previously said that these treatises of the three appearances completely explain the path together with its fruit, what is now said contradicts that. It is not contradictory, if one thinks that this boundary is only limited to this, and that boundary is only limited to that, then one would be contradicting the words of the gurus of beings.
