Conceived in the womb. Later, when born, it showed signs of life like a worm. Then, remembering all the kindness of being cared for with food, clothing, etc., one thinks, "This mother is so kind, I must place her in happiness." Then, remembering the kindness of other relatives, as well as enemies who bring harm, and suffering beings such as the three lower realms, who have also been my mother again and again from beginningless time, one cultivates loving-kindness, wishing to place them in happiness. Second, cultivating compassion: Remembering the kindness of this root mother, one thinks, "This kind mother should be free from suffering, but now she is in the nature of suffering, how pitiful. How wonderful if she were free from suffering! I will place her in freedom from suffering." Similarly, for other beings, remembering their kindness as before, one cultivates compassion, wishing them to be free from suffering. If loving-kindness and compassion are not born in one's mind, genuine bodhicitta will not arise, therefore striving for these two, which are the root of all Mahayana Dharma, is very important. Third, cultivating bodhicitta, which is divided into aspiring bodhicitta, equalizing self and others, and exchanging self and others. First is aspiring bodhicitta: Thus, these kind parents in the three realms of samsara should have happiness and be free from suffering, but I do not have the power to do so now. Moreover, the great ones of the world, such as Brahma and Indra, and the transcendent Hearers and Solitary Buddhas do not have it. Who has it? Only the Fully Enlightened Buddha has it. Therefore, for the sake of all sentient beings, I will attain the state of Fully Enlightened Buddhahood, and then liberate these kind parents from the ocean of samsara. One cultivates this thought. Without this, there is no cause for attaining Buddhahood, and if one has this mind, then all the roots of virtue that one accumulates will become the cause for attaining Fully Enlightened Buddhahood, therefore the Mahayana sutras praise this greatly. Second, cultivating equality of self and others: Just as I desire happiness, all sentient beings also desire happiness. Just as I pursue my own happiness,

One must also accomplish the happiness of all sentient beings. Just as I do not desire suffering, all sentient beings also do not desire suffering. Just as I dispel my own suffering, I must also dispel the suffering of all sentient beings, thinking in this way. Third, the practice of exchanging self and others: Visualize the root mother in front, and although this mother is kind, she is still in the nature of suffering, how pitiful. May the suffering of this mother, and all her non-virtue, ripen upon me, and may I experience it. May all my happiness and virtue ripen upon this mother, and may this mother become a Buddha, thinking in this way. Likewise, practice individually for other relatives, and sentient beings seen and heard, and enemies who harm me, and sentient beings suffering in the lower realms, etc. Finally, all the suffering of all sentient beings gathers into oneself like a cloud, and one's own happiness and virtue, in the temporary state of all sentient beings, becomes the enjoyment of whatever they desire, and in the ultimate, becomes the cause of becoming a Buddha, practice in this way. This is the essence of Mahayana practice, the secret word of all Buddhas of the three times, so the reason why one must practice in this way, and the scriptural proofs as evidence, and the doubts and decisions of the way of practice, although needed, are not elaborated because they would be too numerous. From the aspiration for Bodhicitta to this point, the preliminary refuge and generation of Bodhicitta as shown before are necessary, and on top of that, it is also good to practice Guru Yoga. At the end of all object-oriented sessions, seal with dedication and aspiration prayers, and also remember in all other activities of going, walking, sleeping, and sitting. Fourth, freeing oneself from attachment to the four extremes and causing delusion to arise as wisdom is, in the tradition of other instructions, the two of Shamatha and Vipassana. In Vipassana, there are also practices such as meditating on the selflessness of the person and the selflessness of phenomena, but in the tradition of this school, in equipoise, establishing appearance as mind, establishing mind as illusion, and establishing illusion as without inherent existence are practiced, and in post-meditation, there is the practice of non-attachment to illusion and viewing it as a dream, which is self-
