is one of the practices of complete training. Fourth, if one thinks that there is no need to say that because there is no doubt whether such a special path should be abandoned, it is intentionally pursued by the wisdom of the path and not abandoned, then it is not so. Because when it is shown that all samsara should be abandoned, the mind that wants to take birth in samsara has already been shown to be abandoned. Fifth, then who abandons this? It is abandoned by those of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer lineages, because they only seek the peace of liberation from samsara. Sixth, then, after the Hearer Arhat has abandoned such craving, when entering the Mahayana path, will there be no cause for taking birth in samsara? This is a very difficult point, and it seems that a definite explanation is needed for this reasoning. Please explain it without fail. If one requests and explains in this way, then for this question, the Mind-Only school believes that craving pervades afflictions, so when Hearer and Solitary Realizer Arhats enter the Mahayana path, they rely on meditation to accomplish an emanation body, and with that body they abide for countless eons, thereby accomplishing perfect enlightenment. As it is said in the Ornament of Sutras: 'Those who do not act for the sake of meaning, those Buddhas, without birth, seek the meaning of emanation, those who strive for the meaning of meditation, attain the supreme enlightenment and become Buddhas.' The Madhyamaka school believes that although Hearer and Solitary Realizer Arhats have abandoned afflictive craving, there is still non-afflictive craving. Therefore, when generating the supreme Bodhicitta, it becomes an affliction corresponding to the root of virtue, and because of this, they take birth. As it is said in the Bodhisattvacharyavatara: 'Arising from the state of no remainder of Nirvana, as a means of knowing the cause of taking birth in samsara, although this craving is not afflictive, how can it not exist like ignorance? Because of feeling, there is craving, and feeling also exists in those.' Therefore, it is said. In short, Hearer and Solitary Realizer practitioners intentionally abandon the craving in their own continuum to take birth in samsara, while noble Bodhisattvas intentionally do not abandon the mind in their own continuum to take birth in samsara, which is to prioritize self-interest and to prioritize the benefit of others.

It is the difference of becoming a helper, so it should be added here as well. Seventh, in the Ratnakuta Sutra: Just as the impure excrement of city dwellers is beneficial to the sugarcane field, similarly, the dung of the Bodhisattva's afflictions is beneficial for generating the Buddha's teachings. Also, the sutra says: For those who possess great skillful means, afflictions transform into limbs of enlightenment. Samsara is also of the nature of peace, therefore, the Buddha's sons are inconceivable. Also, regarding this, the sutra says: Just as the results of the paths of the Hearers and so on, and the realizations of the paths are determined separately, the path of the Bodhisattva is not like that, because it is not the case that afflictions are abandoned in all ways. Also, in the sutra regarding the purification of the eighth ground, it says that one deliberately thinks about how sentient beings will mature and completely takes hold of the body. Its meaning is stated in the treatise: Intentionally taking birth in existence. And in its commentary: Seeing the benefit of all sentient beings, taking birth with prior thought is called complete holding. And, destroying all latent tendencies. In the commentary on that, the Manifest Knowledge says: Completely eliminating all latent tendencies refers to the latent tendencies gathered by ignorance and the outflows of views. Bodhisattvas take birth in existence intentionally, so they are not gathered by desire and the outflows of existence. Also, in the Sutra Requested by Sagaramati, the Blessed One said: What are the afflictions that cause samsara but are in accordance with the roots of virtue? For example: not being satisfied with completely seeking the accumulation of merit, intentionally taking birth in existence, wishing to meet the Buddha, not being weary of maturing sentient beings, striving to uphold the sacred Dharma, being delighted to think about what actions would benefit sentient beings, not abandoning the latent tendencies of desiring the Dharma, and not abandoning the practice of the perfections such as generosity. Sagaramati, what are the afflictions that constantly bind Bodhisattvas in the three realms, but are afflictions that are in accordance with the roots of virtue, not tainted by the faults of afflictions?
