If asked, does one deliberately strive to abandon afflictions? The answer is, the second branch of self-nature, namely "self-nature," means that the wisdom of the path does not deliberately strive to abandon afflictions. Because those afflictions are the cause for taking birth in samsara for the benefit of others, therefore not deliberately striving to abandon afflictions is the self-nature of the wisdom of the path. This is how it is proclaimed. So, what are the afflictions? Regarding this, some consider it to be the nature of afflictions, others consider it to be the imprints of afflictions, and still others consider it to be afflictions associated with virtuous roots. Among these, the first is eliminated because afflictions have already been abandoned from the first ground. The second, in the Ratnagotravibhāga, defines the obscuration of knowledge, which is deliberately strived to be abandoned by both coemergent and subsequent obscurations, as the imprints of afflictions, so deliberately striving not to abandon it is contradictory. Therefore, as many previous scholars and Khedrup Yagpa considered the third to be reasonable. That is, the desire or craving to consciously take birth in samsara for the benefit of others, being seized by the wisdom that realizes emptiness and aroused by compassion that focuses on sentient beings, is the affliction associated with virtuous roots that should not be abandoned as taught here. In the Sutra Requested by Sagaramati, one of the eight afflictions associated with virtuous roots is taught. Regarding this, the reason for naming it with the name of affliction, the necessity of naming it, the harm it causes to reality, the reason for the arising of doubt about whether it should be abandoned, showing it to others as something to be abandoned, analyzing other places of doubt, and combining it with the scriptural proof, there are seven points. The first point is that just as afflictions bind beings to the three realms, this also binds bodhisattvas to the three realms. The second point is to show that the skillful means of bodhisattvas are superior to those of śrāvakas, that is, to understand that if the skillful means of bodhisattvas are seized, even without abandoning afflictions, it can be transformed into the path to enlightenment. The third is not the nature of affliction, because it is seized by the special skillful wisdom in the continuum of the bodhisattva, so it is transformed into the Mahayana path, and it is the eighth ground.
