Combining a characteristic with a basis, thereby distinguishing that the characteristic does not belong to that basis, and showing that it definitely belongs to that basis, is something audible; and combining a basis with the word "only," thereby distinguishing that the characteristic belongs to something other than that basis, and showing that it belongs only to that basis, is something audible; and combining "existence" with the word "only," thereby distinguishing that the characteristic does not belong to that basis, and showing that it only exists in that basis, are examples of audible things, such as the statements "sound is only heard," "only sound is heard," and "a calf only exists for a cow." Some say this. To this, some point out the fault of partially confessing the basis and characteristic, and others argue that if the proof for the sake of others is valid, then it is refuted by being similar to the pervasiveness of the meaning of the collection of dharma and the possessor of dharma, and so on. Although many such instances appear, they are not listed here. Some argue that the statement "only sound is heard" is the subject, and it is entailed to be a statement of excluding non-relevance. Because by combining "heard" and "only," it distinguishes that "heard" does not belong to sound, and shows that it definitely belongs to sound, therefore it is heard. The first premise is entailed. Because immediately after stating "only," there is a statement of stating "heard." Saying this is unreasonable. If it is a statement combining "only" and "heard," then it must be a statement combining "heard" and "only." Because the latter pervasiveness is correct. If accepted, then the snow mountain is entailed to exist on the lion. Because the lion exists on the snow mountain. Those definitions are also unreasonable. For example, the statement "black moves quickly" is the subject, and it is entailed to belong to the first definition. Because it is the signified. Among black and the existence argument, the statement "the existence argument moves quickly" is the subject, and it is entailed to belong to the second definition. Because it is the signified. The statement "blue becomes sea-born" is the subject, and it is entailed to belong to the third definition. Because it is the signified. It is not possible to establish all these reasons, nor is it possible to accept them, because even without combining, it is understood from the intention to express. Because that meaning itself will be understood. Because the result of speech is exclusion. For example, "black moves quickly," or "the existence argument moves quickly," or "blue becomes sea-born," and so on. Because it was said that way. In one's own system, there are two: definition and division. The first is, in order, one's own clinging

That is, the speech that prevents the object of expression from appearing in the mind and shows it appearing in the mind, and the speech that prevents other things than the object of one's attachment from appearing in the mind and shows only it appearing in the mind, and the speech that prevents the object of one's attachment from being non-existent and shows that it is existent. The second is divided into three kinds of speech with definite distinctions and three kinds of speech without definite distinctions. The first is, in order, the speech such as "sound is only made", "sound is only heard", and "blue on a lotus is only existent". The second is divided into three kinds of speech with only the base of distinction and three kinds of speech with the base and attribute combined. The first is the speech "vase", which contains all three. The latter is the speech "black is quick" when asked whether black or quick is quick, and the speech "existence is quick" when asked whether black or existence is quick, and the speech such as "blue exists on a lotus" when asked whether blue exists or not on a lotus. Third, incidentally, identifying the three distinctions of the object of expression, there are three distinctions with only the base, and three distinctions with the base and attribute combined. The first is that one vase itself contains all three. The second is that some say "made is a distinction that does not exist in sound", and "heard is a distinction that has other things in sound", and "heard is a distinction that does not exist in sound", although there are cases where they are combined with their respective attributes, but when combined with the same attribute, there must be a case where all three are present, because if the name is completely pure, it must have the three distinctions of the object of expression. So how should it be? Heard is a distinction that does not exist in sound, because if it is sound, it must be heard. This eliminates non-pervasion. It is a distinction that has other things in sound, because if it is not sound, it must not be heard. This eliminates over-pervasion. It is a distinction that does not exist in sound, because heard exists on all bases of sound. This eliminates non-existence. This is the view of Dignāga and Dharmakīrti, because Dignāga's definition of name is unerring knowledge.
