Ways of Understanding Appearance and Exclusion Ways of Understanding Appearance and Exclusion Secondly, regarding the ways of understanding appearance and exclusion, there are two aspects: generally showing the way of entering, and ascertaining the individual self-natures. The first aspect is: non-conceptual consciousness enters through the appearance of its own object, because the action is completed by mere appearance. All conceptualizations enter through the exclusion of their own object, because the action is not completed by mere appearance, but performs the action of excluding dissimilar types. Thus, of these two, appearance has two types: mistaken and non-mistaken. Exclusion has two types: inverted and non-inverted. The second aspect has two parts: the actual distinction between appearance and exclusion, and incidentally, examining exclusion-entry and establishment-entry. The first aspect has two parts: appearance and exclusion. The first has two parts: definition and division. The first is: the difference in how non-conceptual consciousness sees its own object. The second aspect: there are two types: the appearance of mistaken non-conceptual and the appearance of non-mistaken. The first is: Definition: The apprehended aspect in which the absence of self-character appears clearly. Division: There are two types: the appearance of mistaken sense consciousness and the appearance of mistaken mental consciousness. The second, the appearance of non-mistaken non-conceptual, has three aspects: definition, division, and establishing the definition on the basis. The first is: the appearance that appears clearly in its own time to the non-mistaken non-conceptual consciousness. The second, division, has two types: the appearance of self-awareness direct perception and the appearance of object-awareness direct perception. The third, there are three aspects: the reality of the object, the way the mind grasps, and proving that mind and object are consistent. The first is: The Vaibhashikas assert that blue and its impermanence are different substances, blue is the form aggregate and its impermanence is any non-associated formation, because these five aggregates are not one substance. In the Abhidharmasamuccaya, blue is considered to be substantially existent and its impermanence is considered to be nominally existent, but here, for lapis lazuli and other blues, and for things like action and impermanence, in reality, let alone different substances, even the exclusions are not different. The appearance of these three as different only appears to conceptual thought, but in non-conceptual consciousness they appear as one. For example, the shapa tree and the cedar tree have no common properties in reality. If it is the substance of the shapa tree, it must not be the substance of the cedar tree. If it is the substance of the cedar tree, it must not be the substance of the shapa tree.

For that reason. Secondly, the blue's produced and impermanent are not different entities in meaning, for this reason, they appear as one in the sense consciousness, that is, in the root direct perception that apprehends blue, when blue appears, its produced and impermanent appear as one. Juniper and fir are not one entity in meaning, for this reason, they appear as different in non-conceptual consciousness, that is, among them, when juniper appears, fir may not appear; when fir appears, juniper may not appear; and, when the two appear together, they appear as different entities. Thirdly, there are three: the common way, establishing its proof, therefore direct perception is uncertain. First, non-conceptual and non-erroneous knowledge, and its object, the external object, both object and subject are common, that is, if the external object exists as one entity, then it also appears that way in it; if it exists as different entities, then it also appears as different entities in it. Second, whatever is a single entity with inseparable essence, direct perception pervades the absence of two parts, seeing and not seeing. For example, when seeing lapis lazuli, it is like seeing its blue. The pot and its produced, impermanent three, are also said to be a single entity with inseparable essence. Its property is established by independent reason and harmful cause. The pervasion is established based on the experience of seeing lapis lazuli, seeing its blue. Third, direct perception does not determine its own object, because it is only by seeing that object that it becomes the measure of that object. As the "Self-Commentary" says: "Now, how is uncertainty taken by direct perception?" and so on. As the "Pramāṇavārttika" says: "Self-awareness, whose nature is happiness and so on, is unrelated to expression, that is the measure of direct perception." As the "Nyāyabindu" says: "Among them, first, seeing the uncommon object, that alone is the measure." Because of these words. If it is said: "It is not the result of determining existence or non-existence, therefore it will not become a measure." This is contradictory. There is no fault, because it refers to leading to certainty by one's own power and leading to certainty by others' power. If it is said that if one does not determine one's own object, one will not become a measure, to this answer, some say that direct perception has conceptual determination.
