If they arise simultaneously, and if not, then from what do they arise later? If it is said that they arise from the previous consciousness, that is indeed the case. Buddhist, thesis, your assertion that the later consciousness arises from the previous consciousness is established, because the later consciousness arises from action, and that arises from the previous consciousness. Second, if the previous consciousness is the immediate cause of the later consciousness that grasps itself, but is not the object of grasping, then will the later consciousness shift to another object? Previous consciousness, thesis, you possess the characteristic of being the object of grasping for the later consciousness, because you are the direct generator of the later consciousness that grasps itself. This is pervasive, because in general, for things that are objects of grasping, the aspect of being an object of grasping is none other than directly generating the consciousness that grasps itself. If it is said that directly generating grasping is not the characteristic of being grasped, because appearance directly generates grasping but is not an object of grasping, then, appearance, thesis, it is impossible that the part of you that directly generates grasping is not grasped, because the part of you that directly generates grasping is the same entity as that object of grasping. For example, like a red-hot iron ball. If it is said that appearance has parts and therefore generates consciousness, but its other parts etc. are not grasped, similarly, the previous consciousness is also the cause of the later consciousness, but some of its parts are not grasped, then, previous consciousness, thesis, even if some parts generate the later consciousness through being subtle etc., it is impossible that they are not grasped. Because there are no parts, i.e., no directional components. The third part has three aspects: direct refutation, dispelling disputes, and conclusion. First, for the first consciousness, there are two abilities: to be the object of grasping for the later consciousness and to generate the nature of the later consciousness. If the ability of the previous consciousness to be the object of grasping for the later consciousness disappears, but the other nature of generating the later consciousness does not disappear, then will the later consciousness arise and shift to another object? In general, for things that have the characteristic of being grasped, thesis, it is unreasonable that your ability to be grasped disappears but the ability to generate does not disappear. Because you directly generate from the part of the consciousness that grasps itself as the object of grasping

Because there are no other components that act as the agent, but it is the only agent. For example, the objects of apprehension, such as form, etc., are not the objects of apprehension for self-grasping consciousness, because they cannot actually help the self-grasping mind. Therefore, from the definition of the object of apprehension, what else is there that is certain for the self-grasping consciousness other than being an object that actually helps? There is nothing. Therefore, all previous minds, as subjects, must also exist in the object of apprehension of the later mind, because the later mind is actually able to generate the ability of self-grasping. This is pervasive, because the self-grasping later mind is the actual immediate cause and is the object experienced by the later mind, so it must have the definition of the object of apprehension of the mind, that is, the later mind. Second, if, like subtle forms and minds that are not immediate causes, they are not external objects of apprehension and objects of apprehension of the mind, then yogis will apprehend subtle forms and other minds that are not immediate causes, etc., which contradicts this. If it is said that for forms, etc., to become objects of apprehension, they need to appear as gross, without interruption, and close, etc., and if the mind is considered an object of apprehension, then it needs to be the immediate cause of the self-grasping consciousness, then this analysis of the definition of the object of apprehension, as a subject, is for impure wisdom and short-sighted views, not for noble yogis, because the way noble yogis realize objects is inconceivable. Third, if forms, etc., were previously close, without interruption, and appeared as gross, and later became distant, interrupted, and subtle, etc., so that what was previously apprehended is no longer apprehended, then, the wisdom that grasps forms, etc., as a subject, what reason do you have to say that the grossness that did not exist before has become subtle, etc., causing what was previously an object of apprehension to no longer be an object of apprehension? It will not change, because it is not an embodied thing. If it is admitted that because wisdom has not become subtle, etc., the later wisdom will grasp the previous wisdom, then the later knowledge, as a subject, will not realize other things, such as forms, etc., because it has become its own immediate cause.
