It is certain that the meaning of valid cognition is non-deception, because subsequent ascertainment is certain not to deceive the object it engages with, hence the term 'valid cognition' is applied. Now, does that ascertainment lead by its own power or by the power of another? As it says: 'Two that understand objects and two that are self-aware, inferences are determined by themselves. Do not trust the first ones and the mind, those with causes of error are determined by others.' Thus, it should be understood. Most Tibetans think that the former only shows self-determination, and the latter only shows other-determination, which seems to be without distinguishing the difference of establishing self-determination and other-determination on what basis. The valid cognition of self-determination and other-determination also seems not to understand the way of establishing it only on the valid cognition that is universally applied. What is said here is not the same as the explanation of Jamyang Sakya. In this, the aspect of knowledge is a reversal of meaning, not a term, and the difference that 'valid cognition itself' is also a reversal of meaning, not a term, is very important, which has already been explained in the general meaning. If knowledge is from oneself and non-deception is determined by terms, then would the treatises on valid cognition become meaningless? The treatises on valid cognition, the subject, are not meaningless, because if one does not know the definition of universally applied valid cognition, then one cannot establish the Bhagavan as valid cognition, so it is necessary to dispel ignorance about valid cognition and its definition, and to realize it without reversing it. Secondly, if so, is it contradictory to what is said in some parts of Dharmakirti's treatises, 'clarifying what is not known'? It is not contradictory, because the clarification of what is not known is also the same in meaning as the former, so it is the definition of valid cognition. Lha considers the definition to be different, and Gyen considers the characteristic and the characterized to be different, which has been refuted in the Treasury of Reasoning. Some say that the former shows Dharmakirti's own system, and the latter shows Dignāga's system, which has already been refuted in the general meaning. Does this not pervade the valid cognition of refutation? In response to that, Indians and some Tibetans say that the object of refutation itself, or the object of the dharma to be refuted itself, or the apprehended aspect of conceptualization itself, is shown as the object of engagement, so there is no fault. However, Jetsun Sakya said: 'It is appropriate to examine whether self-characteristics exist or not.' As it is said, it will be explained below. If so, after directly realizing the nature of self-characteristics such as blue, etc.

The consciousness that apprehends the universal of blue should be a valid cognition because it is a manifestor of an object not previously known, that is, because it is a consciousness of a universal not previously known by direct perception. That (the consciousness apprehending the universal of blue) should be, even if it is a new cognition of the universal of blue, it will not become a manifestor of an object not previously known, because the statement that "whatever newly cognizes its own nature, whether existent or nonexistent, which was not previously known, is the characteristic of a valid cognition" is the intention of that characteristic, that is, the reason for its meaning. Why? If its own nature (dharma) is a conventionally established valid cognition, then it is necessary to know whether you exist or not, because the ascertainment arising from it will investigate whether you exist or not. Third, the Bhagavan (dharma) is a person who is a valid cognition, because he is a person who possesses the nature of not deceiving beings to be tamed. Most Tibetans explain it as having the meaning of both characteristics, because the earlier treatises determined the meaning of valid cognition in the praise verses of the sutras, and the later treatises did not understand the meaning of refuting contradictions with other treatises. Second, there are three necessities for stating "became": "Became" is stated to refute self-origination, it is established that valid cognition depends on means, and the refutation of self-origination is explained in detail. First, it is sufficient to praise it as "is a valid cognition," why is "became" stated? The "became" itself stated in the praise verses of the sutras (dharma) is necessary, because it is for the purpose of reversing the existence of a self-originated valid cognition that does not arise from its own cause. Second, the Bhagavan (dharma) should be valid cognition depending on diligence in the non-erroneous cause of proof, because whatever person is a valid cognition, the self-originated valid cognition has already been refuted. Third, there are four: refuting the self-originated valid cognition of permanence, refuting the self-originated valid cognition of impermanence, refuting the proof of the existence of self-origination, and refuting the function of self-origination itself. First, it is unreasonable to state "became" in order to refute the valid cognition of permanence, because Ishvara is a permanent valid cognition that is established by its own nature. Ishvara (dharma) is not a permanent valid cognition, because only the consciousness that realizes an existent thing is a valid cognition, and because the object of knowledge is impermanent, the consciousness that has an object is also unstable.
