Regarding disbelief, the rituals spoken of in the scriptures, and the methods for exhausting karma and the body, the statement that they cannot serve as antidotes, stringing these together, are two instances regarding the path of antidotes, and for these two instances, without distinguishing the appropriate refutations of other views, the focus is placed on practice, and this treatise is insisted upon as a text dedicated to debate. I, due to the blessings of Sakya Pandita and the power of his good teachings, am free from the burden of being confused about the key points of logic. Third, apart from these, there are four points regarding the absence of antidotes for karma and the body: Abandoning karma and the body lacks necessary ability; denying the existence of antidotes for exhausting karma; abandoning what contradicts the desire to exhaust karma; abandoning the similarity of cause and effect between karma and afflictions. The first point is: Just as the antidote for abandoning afflictions is the path, the antidote for abandoning karma and the body also becomes the path, because karma, the body, and afflictions are all causes of arising, if it is said. Those who seek liberation, it is not merely abandoning karma and the body alone, because there are no antidotes that abandon only these two, and without abandoning craving, there is no ability to abandon these two. The reason is established, because if craving exists, karma and the body will arise again. If it is thought that one should strive to exhaust both craving and karma, then, those who seek liberation, even if they strive to exhaust both craving and karma, the part that is exhausted for the sake of exhausting karma is meaningless, because abandoning craving will not produce karma. The second point is: Because there are no antidotes, the reason for this statement is not established, if it is thought that asceticism can exhaust the power of previous karma. Karmas with defilements, their nature is, it is inferred that the ability to produce different results is different, because it is seen that various different results are produced. Therefore, the afflictions of asceticism, that is, the objects of suffering, their nature is, you alone cannot exhaust all karmas, because some of your types are similar, such as hunger, the result it produces will become small, but the result of karma that produces suffering of dissimilar types, even becoming small is not the case. If the power of asceticism mixes all the powers of karma together, then it will be painful.

If it is said that exhausting (karma) by experiencing one suffering or one asceticism, then asceticism, the afflictions you possess, that is, the part of suffering, like plucking hair, is either abandoning all karma, or completely abandoning without relying on afflictions, that is, suffering, these two are contradictory. You mix all the power of karma together, and then exhaust it with one suffering or one asceticism, what is this? Because you want to regard afflictions, that is, suffering, as something else. If this is not established, if it is said that it is afflictions, that is, suffering itself, then asceticism, it is impossible for it to have the effect of mixing and exhausting all the power of karma, because it is the result of unwholesome karma. Third, if you also think that by realizing selflessness, even its resultant karma can be exhausted, then how can there be no antidote to exhaust karma? The path of realizing selflessness, it is the method to prevent all faults and desires, because the fault of wanting to generate subsequent desires in the future from previous desires is because the seeds of subsequent desires are destroyed. Therefore, the path of realizing selflessness, it is able to destroy the karma generated by subsequent desires, but how can it make the retribution of karma previously created disappear? This is impossible, because the karma created by desire will definitely produce retribution. Fourth, if it is said that because karma arises from afflictions, so if afflictions exist, liberation is impossible, similarly, because afflictions also arise from karma, so if karma exists, liberation is also impossible, then the karma that has eliminated afflictions, it is impossible for you to generate faulty afflictions from it, because you have no afflictions. This is pervasive, if one has faulty afflictions, one will create karma, conversely, if one does not have them, one will not generate karma and afflictions. If this is not established, if it is said that happiness and suffering arise from good and bad karma, and then greed and hatred arise from them, then the person who has abandoned the view of self, even from happiness and suffering, will not generate greed and hatred, etc., because there is no inverted thought of clinging to self and what belongs to self. Second, the way to establish the Sugata from that is, the protector who truly proclaims the four truths, you are taken as the subject.
