It is important to completely sever the bonds of samsara, rather than merely enduring for a moment like this! The suffering of suffering is abundant upon each of the six realms of beings. Those with heavy sins, after death, are born in hell, and the way they experience suffering is as follows: Twenty thousand yojanas below this Jambudvipa is a ground of burning iron, upon which, like a fresh lump of flesh created by sin, there are many yojanas, and suffering descends continuously. These are the eight hot hells: Reviving Hell, Black Line Hell, Crushing Hell, Crying Hell, Great Crying Hell, Hot Hell, Very Hot Hell, and Uninterrupted Hell. The neighboring hells include the Pit of Embers, the Mire of Corpses, the Path of Knives, the Forest of Sword Leaves, Mount Iron Pillar, and the River of Ashes of the Immeasurable River, each located in the four directions. As stated in the Treasury of Knowledge: "Twenty thousand yojanas below this, is the Uninterrupted Hell, and it is the same distance. Above it are seven hells, the eighth possesses sixteen additions. On the four sides of these are, the Pit of Embers, the Mire of Corpses, the Path of Knives, and rivers, etc. The Blister Hell and others are eight other cold hells." The eight cold hells are located below this Jambudvipa, by the shore of the great ocean, in the dark abyss, in ice caves where fierce winds rage. These are the Blister Hell, the Bursting Blister Hell, the Achuchu Hell, the Huhu Hell, the Chattering Teeth Hell, the Blue Lotus Cracking Hell, the Red Lotus Cracking Hell, and the Great Red Lotus Cracking Hell. The ephemeral hells have no fixed location, and the suffering experienced is also diverse. In these hells, there is not the slightest opportunity for happiness, only endless suffering, and they remain there. If three hundred spears were continuously thrust into a human body, it would not even touch the edge of the suffering of hell. The lifespan of beings in the hot hells is: taking fifty human years as one day for the Four Great Kings, their lifespan is five hundred years. The lifespan of beings in the Reviving Hell is five hundred years, taking the lifespan of the Four Great Kings as one day. The lifespan of the Paranirmitavasavartin gods is sixteen thousand years, taking sixteen hundred human years as one day. The lifespan of beings in the Hot Hell is sixteen thousand years, taking the lifespan of the Paranirmitavasavartin gods as one day. The lifespan of beings in the Very Hot Hell is half a middle kalpa. The lifespan of beings in the Uninterrupted Hell is one middle kalpa.

They experience suffering that is difficult to endure. In the cold hell of the Blister Hell, a storehouse filled to the brim with eighty cartloads of sesame seeds has one seed removed every hundred years. When the seeds are exhausted, their lifespan is complete. The others have lifespans twenty times longer than that. These are explained concisely from the Abhidharma: The six hells, starting with Revival, are in order: Their lifespans are equal to the days and nights of the desire realm gods. Therefore, their lifespans are similar to the desire realm gods. The Extremely Hot and Half-Hot hells last for an intermediate kalpa. As it is said: From a sesame seed pool, one sesame seed is removed every hundred years. When the sesame seeds are exhausted, that is the lifespan of the Blister Hell. The lifespans of the others are twenty times longer. The realm of the pretas is five hundred yojanas below this, pervading the entire world of Yama, and is connected to the human realm and the sky. The characteristics of suffering are that those with external obscurations see everything as weapons, and everything appears as pus and blood, which cannot be eaten. Those with internal obscurations cannot swallow food and drink, etc. Those with obscurations of food and drink find that whatever they eat bursts into flames, etc. The suffering is immeasurable, and their lifespan is five hundred years, with one human month counted as one day. As it is said: Pretas, etc., live for five hundred years, with a month as a day. The realm of animals is uncertain. Some are as large as Mount Meru, and some are as small as a hair tip. The suffering is that they eat each other, are used for labor and slaughter, are cut down and plowed, are burdened and beaten with sticks, etc. The nagas are subjected to showers of gravel that separate their flesh and bones. Their lifespans range from an instant to some nagas living for a kalpa, so it is uncertain. As it is said: Animals, etc., have lifespans that can be as long as a kalpa. The sixth common aim. Auspicious! In the realm of humans as well, the suffering that arises for us humans includes the four sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, and death. Separation from what is loved, encountering what is disliked, encountering enemies, separation from loved ones, difficulty in protecting what one has, and not finding what one seeks, etc., have been experienced in the past and are still being experienced continuously. Asuras suffer from killing, cutting, and piercing due to fighting. The desire realm gods also, for a time, are attached to and intoxicated by sensual pleasures, and when their lifespan is exhausted, their flower garlands wither, they dislike their cushions, and the sons and daughters of the gods abandon their bodies.
