Those who are determined and have subdued their senses, grow old in peaceful monasteries, and those who are greatly learned in the forests, it is comfortable to dwell in the places of those whose youth has passed. Thus, having spoken of the manner arising from the qualities of practice, the first is the classification: the one-seat dweller, the alms-gatherer, the non-receiver, the three-robe wearer, the felt-wearer, the dust-sweeper, the tree-dweller, the monastery-dweller, the no-roof dweller, the charnel ground dweller, the as-it-is dweller, and the constant sitter. The first three of these depend on food, the next three depend on clothing, the five beginning with the tree-dweller depend on dwelling, and the last depends on conduct, thus being gathered into four categories. If one praises the qualities of practice in a person, one praises the practice of constantly afflicting the mind with desire, for by conduct that is in accordance with suffering, one is able to abandon attachment. But one does not praise the constant practice of hatred, for its direct cause is unpleasantness. In what order does this quality of practice become the antidote to what? It is the antidote to attachment to food that is available at any time and eating at any time (11a), namely the one-seat dweller who has water as his boundary and a seat as his boundary; the antidote to attachment to being invited as a guest is the alms-gatherer, who is liberated from attachment to doors and whose number is fixed; the antidote to repeatedly giving and taking is the non-receiver; the antidote to attachment to extra and necessary clothing is the three-robe wearer; the antidote to attachment to silk clothing is the felt-wearer; the antidote to attachment to fine clothing is the discarded; the antidote to attachment to sweeping dust at seasonal times is the dust-sweeper; the antidote to attachment to circumambulation is the tree-dweller; the antidote to attachment to village children and women is the monastery-dweller; the antidote to attachment to coverings is the no-roof dweller; the antidote to attachment to sentient beings is the charnel ground dweller; the antidote to attachment to measuring dwelling places is the as-it-is dweller; the antidote to attachment to sleeping and laziness is the constant sitter. By acting in this way, the mind can be used for virtue, therefore it is called the quality of practice. In monasteries and under trees, if those who have heard much dwell, it becomes a cause for the mind to abide, but otherwise it is not so. The ritual for taking the qualities of practice is: the image of the Buddha.

Inviting the Sangha, including monks, and making offerings to the objects of veneration, performing three prostrations. Performing three prostrations to elder monks. Requesting the Sangha to listen, and commencing refuge, until the end of life, or with a time limit, on the same seat (11b), etc., requesting the venerable ones to hold it, repeating this three times. Skillful means, abandoning the past time. Thus, by reciting the offerings, obstacles are cleared and joy is generated by the benefits. To eliminate the inability to accomplish due to laziness, it is shown that one must diligently strive, which is: Venerable ones, the past and remaining lifespan is just that much. What is the necessity of stating the time here? The cause of samsara is affliction, and that arises from the clinging to permanence, and its antidote is impermanence. However, among impermanence, momentary impermanence, although it appears, is uncertain, so it cannot become an antidote. Constant impermanence, at the time of reciting the sutras, by stating the past and future time, by focusing attention on the statement of the exhaustion of life, constant impermanence arises in the continuum, and understanding the terms of the world, so that the Uposatha does not decline, especially to understand the fourteenth Uposatha, and the months of its absence. Therefore, time is swiftly impermanent, therefore, venerable ones, aging and death will manifest, and the teachings of the Teacher will also be destroyed, so venerable ones should practice yoga with mindfulness. Thus it is said. In the five thousand years that the Buddha's teachings remain, the four periods of five hundred years are the four periods of the fruits of the ascetic path. The two periods of five hundred years are the periods of direct realization, that is, the periods of Vipassanā and Śamatha. The three periods of five hundred years are the periods of the three pitakas (12a). The one period of five hundred years is the period of merely holding the signs, that is, the period of fifty years of life. From the age of ten, even the mere holding of signs does not exist, from between forty, thirty, and twenty years to the age of ten, the lifespan is shortened by the kalpa of weapons, disease, and famine. Nowadays, some people think that direct realization is the period of Śamatha, but in reality it is the period of merely existing signs. From this small Jambudvipa (Earth), from India (Holy Land) to China, etc., in order, are the various periods of five hundred years.
