The cause of non-virtue is black karma, which comes only from non-virtue, not from virtue. The pleasing and virtuous result is seen as coming from virtuous karma, not from non-virtue. If a wise person realizes that both virtuous and non-virtuous karma are without inherent existence, then he will be liberated. Thus, it is very difficult to understand how a result arises from karma that is without inherent existence, and how the results are individually determined. Therefore, the Blessed One, fearing that ordinary people who are very meticulous in examining the cause and effect of karma might destroy the conventional reality by slandering karma and its effects, said to those who were afraid, "The ripening of the fruits of karma is inconceivable." In this way, he also forbade children from thinking about the connections between karma and its effects, because they cannot understand the connection between karma and its effects through direct perception. Although karma and its effects are not established by their own nature, they appear as separate truths without deception, which is due to the power of the wisdom of hearing, thinking, and meditating. If one thinks arbitrarily, one will only perceive contradictions, so how the object of consciousness is determined, that is, the object to be grasped, is inconceivable. In the second part, the teachings on the Alaya and so on are shown to be provisional, and all that the Tathagata said to exist is shown to be definitive. The first is: "The Alaya consciousness exists, and the person also exists, and these aggregates alone exist." This teaching is for those who do not understand the profound meaning. Why? If one asks how karma and its effects are established when they are without inherent existence, then, as stated in the Lankavatara Sutra and others, the Alaya consciousness is the basis for the distinctions of the power of limitless dharmas, and all seeds, like waves arising from the ocean, are the cause of the arising of all things. Is this not completely non-existent? However, with regard to the minds of some people who are attached, it is only a matter of thinking in accordance with their inclinations, so it is not completely non-existent. However, because it is not as it appears literally, it is taught in that way to meet their needs, so it is taught to sentient beings to make them think that it really exists. If it is said in that way to meet their needs, then what is its intention? It is only with emptiness as its intention, not saying that there is a real thing called Alaya.

was taught because it follows the nature of all things. Therefore, in which sutra, the Alaya consciousness is the basis of the fruit, and for the sake of the disciples, it is also said that there is a person. As it is said in the sutra: Monks, the five aggregates are a burden. The bearer of the burden is a person. It is said like this. To some, it is taught that only these aggregates without self exist. This is for those who cling to things as real, in order to gradually understand, for those who cannot understand such profound (204a) meaning of emptiness, it is taught that Alaya consciousness and so on exist as literal meanings. Later, when the meaning of the scriptures that are free from reversal is understood, the attachment to Alaya consciousness and so on will also be abandoned. Teaching in this way does not produce faults, because the Buddha's teachings need to be taught according to the capacity of beings and the times. As it is said in the sutra: Whatever one likes, that should be said first. If the vessel cannot bear it, it will damage the supreme Dharma. The second point is: Even if one is free from the view of the collection of destruction, the Buddha, like me and my teachings, although things have no self-nature, says that they exist, which is to guide beings. In order to guide the disciples into the supreme teachings, not only is the Alaya consciousness taught, but even if all views of the collection of destruction are abandoned, in order for beings to understand the meaning of the world, the Buddha, like me at what time, although things have no self-nature, in order for beings to understand the profound meaning, it is also taught that things from form to omniscience exist, which is a kind of guidance. This applies to all teachings such as the Four Truths, the Two Truths, and the Three Natures. Therefore, in the verses that are in accordance with the Sarvastivadins, it is said: If the guides of the world do not follow the world, then no one will know the Dharma nature of the Buddha and the Buddha. They believe that the aggregates, realms, and (204b) sources have the same nature, and they proclaim the three realms, which is in accordance with the world.
