How should the consequentialist's subsequent inference be stated? For example, some Shravaka schools believe that the idea of "the eye seeing other objects" also implies that the eye possesses the characteristic of not seeing its own nature. At that time, the proponent acknowledges the pervasion. If the characteristic of seeing blue and other objects does not involve seeing oneself, then the act of seeing others will not arise. This is also acknowledged by the example of a pot. At that time, the pervasion is acknowledged. Having stated these three ways of acknowledgement, the consequentialist's subsequent inference to refute one's own tenet is: because of that reason, whatever does not see its own nature does not see others either, like a pot. The eye also has the characteristic of not seeing its own nature, therefore, it does not see others either. Therefore, being contradictory to not seeing one's own nature, seeing blue and other objects contradicts the subsequent inference that is known to the pervasion itself. For those who say this, the Vaibhashikas, the subsequent inference that is established eliminates their wrong conceptions. Therefore, for what dissimilar faults should these subsequent inferences refute the other side? For our statements, what similar faults would arise? For us consequentialists, where is there an opportunity to introduce the fault of the basis and sign not being established as valid cognitions in common, as has been said? Furthermore, whether it is the proponent or the opponent, through the means of an established subsequent inference (125a) will they also be harmed by a subsequent inference? The answer is: yes. That is also harmed by the reason itself that is established by the proponent's own acknowledgement, but not by being established for another proponent. Because that is how it is seen in the world. For example, in worldly debates, sometimes if one does not contradict the words of a witness who is considered valid by both the proponent and the opponent, one will be defeated. Sometimes one is defeated simply by saying that one's own words are not true. If one speaks truthfully without contradiction, and another says that your statement does not correspond to the meaning, or conversely, that it contradicts it, then the first speaker will not be victorious or defeated because of that. That is how it is in the world.

If it is said that it is not so in the case of reasoning, then it is the same for those who speak of reasoning as it is in the world. Because speaking in accordance with the worldly terminology of calling something "reasonable" and "unreasonable" is appropriate to the context of treatises on reasoning, it is applied in this way. Otherwise, in the face of that which transcends the world and is free from the elaboration of terminology, where can the validity and invalidity of reason and unreason be established? It is because of this that the great teacher Buddhapālita's view that the Prāsaṅgikas refute the views of others with reasons that are accepted by others and establish what others do not accept was not pleasing to the teacher Vasubandhu. As the teacher Vasubandhu said: "Some think that inference based on what is known to others (125b) is not a fault, because what they want to refute is precisely what is known to others." In accordance with this, Dignāga said: "That which is definitely stated to both is either proof or refutation; to say that it is established or doubtful to either one is not." Therefore, victory or defeat in debate is determined by both the proponent and the opponent accepting the subject-property and the pervasion. If one party accepts and the other does not, it will not be determined. Even if one thinks so, it is just thinking, and it is not speaking in accordance with reason. Even they think that if worldly people and those who speak of reason debate in the world, then it is reasonable to accept this way of relying on the distinction between what is reasonable and unreasonable as it is known in the world, and that even if the consequence and inference are not established for oneself, it is sufficient if they are established for others, as they say. If it is not so, then the harm of the scriptures of the non-Buddhists is not established for both the non-Buddhists and the Buddhists. When citing the scriptures of the non-Buddhists to establish harm to the non-Buddhists, it is not the case that harm is expressed only through scriptures that are established for both the Buddhists and the non-Buddhists. So how does that scripture express harm? The scripture that is not established for the Buddhists refutes the views of the non-Buddhists through the way that it is established for the non-Buddhists themselves. Similarly, the Madhyamikas and the realists
