Kyabchok Pal Zangpo, Jetsun Redawa Chenpo, and Taktsang Lotsawa, etc., were as rare as stars in the daytime. Therefore, although the excellent explanations of what is known as the New Madhyamaka or New Kadampa are not bad, they are set aside. How the early Madhyamikas such as the Jowo tradition (140a), and especially the four sons of Tsapchu, explain, and how it appears in the Great Commentary on the Madhyamaka Legacy of the great self-master, Jamyang Chokyi Tsondu, in order to fulfill the intentions of those early holy beings, I say this: All phenomena from form to omniscience are primordially free from all elaborations and signs such as existence and non-existence, permanence and annihilation, knower and knowable, one and different. The non-conceptual wisdom of the meditative equipoise of the great noble ones sees nothing at all of elaborations and signs with their own awareness wisdom, and that is merely labeled as the ultimate truth and suchness of phenomena from form to omniscience. It is not established as something independent of the meditative equipoise of the noble ones, or as something different from it. Nor is there a meditative equipoise of the noble ones that is different from the ultimate truth. Furthermore, for all phenomena from form to omniscience, all the terms that children and ordinary people apply to persons and phenomena due to the ignorance of being attached to things that have been familiar since beginningless time, from the characteristic of form being susceptible to change to the characteristic of omniscience being the manifestation of all aspects, such as essence, existence and non-existence, one and different, knowable and knower, expressible and expressing, are all called conventional (140b) from form to omniscience. These are not established as separate from the ignorance that conceives them, nor are they the same as ignorance itself, but if not examined, they are pleasing only when unexamined, and if examined even slightly, they are merely an assembly of causes and conditions. Without inherent existence, they follow the terms of expression and conceptualization.

Therefore, it is merely a name, merely a symbol, merely a term, merely a concept, merely an imputation. If examined very well, those dharmas from form up to omniscience are inherently peaceful, being free from all elaborations and characteristics. It is not as if they become free from elaborations because they are seen by the noble ones, or become free from elaborations because they are examined by reason, or are made free from elaborations by emptiness. Those dharmas that are found in the minds of those who have not examined or have examined only slightly are called conventional. But those that are found through excellent examination and the equipoise of the noble ones are called ultimate. Therefore, even for a single object like a pot, children find an inherent nature and endless differences to impute, which is conventional. But the noble ones do not see any of these things anywhere, and they see it in a way that nothing is seen, which is called seeing the ultimate. Therefore, these two truths are not different in essence, but are distinguished separately in relation to the minds that are deluded and not deluded. The distinction is also made because it is established in the minds of children that everything seen by children is false and of a deceptive nature (141a). Therefore, it is called conventional. Everything that children see and impute is not seen at all by the noble ones. What is not seen and not found by the noble ones is what abides in reality, and therefore it is established as ultimate. Therefore, both truths are spoken in relation to the minds of children and out of necessity. It is not that the noble ones see the two truths and speak from the perspective that they exist as two. As it is said in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: "Not seeing that very truth, the world and nirvana, all arise as delusion." Contrary to this principle, the great Dolpopa says: The scriptures such as the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, the later Maitreya's teachings, and the treatises of the Asanga brothers, while acknowledging the definitive meaning of the Great Madhyamaka, do not consider the selflessness and absence of inherent existence of phenomena to be the ultimate truth. They assert that there is a Suchness that is different in essence from phenomena, and they say that the two truths are different in essence. This contradicts the scriptures that they themselves acknowledge as definitive. How much more so does it contradict the definitive scriptures such as the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra?

Not to mention contradicting the words of past generations and the followers of Nagarjuna and his sons. This is also not the tenet of the Hearer schools from the Sthavira Nikaya to the Sautrantika, nor of the external schools from the Carvaka to the Samkhya. Because they cannot contradict the scriptures they have accepted, and they also analyze phenomena with reason. (141b) Therefore, if the two truths are different in meaning, then they will appear different to the noble ones. If this is accepted, then the noble ones will also not be free from the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, and therefore nirvana and perfect enlightenment will never be possible. As it says in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: If the characteristics of conditioned phenomena and the characteristics of ultimate reality are different, then those who have seen the truth will also not be free from the characteristics of conditioned phenomena. Because they are not free from the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, those who have seen the truth will also not be liberated from the bondage of characteristics. If they are not liberated from the bondage of characteristics, then they will also not be liberated from the bondage of suffering. If they are not liberated from these two bondages, then those who have seen the truth will also not attain accomplishment and the unsurpassed bliss of nirvana, nor will they attain unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment. And so on, it is extensively taught. Finally, regarding those who say that the characteristics of conditioned phenomena and the characteristics of ultimate reality are different, it says: Those who say that the characteristics of conditioned phenomena and the characteristics of ultimate reality are different, you have entered in an inappropriate way, and it should be known that this is an inappropriate entry. Furthermore, the ultimate truth will also not be the nature of all phenomena, suchness, and the general characteristic, because the ultimate truth is different from all phenomena. If it is different but is still the nature, then everything will be the nature of everything, which is too extreme. As it says in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra: Highly intelligent one, if (142a) the characteristics of conditioned phenomena and the characteristics of ultimate reality are different, then for all the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, the characteristics of ultimate reality will not become a general characteristic. And so on, it is said. The selflessness of conditioned phenomena and merely the absence of inherent existence will also not be considered the ultimate truth.
