are. What is the emptiness of those by it? That is the emptiness of things. The sound called "things," in short, refers to the five aggregates. What is the emptiness of those, that is the emptiness of things. The second is, in short, it refers to non-things, and is spoken of for unconditioned dharmas. It itself is empty by non-things, it is the emptiness of non-things. Speaking of non-things, in short, it refers to space and nirvana, etc., unconditioned dharmas. The emptiness of non-things itself and by non-things itself is spoken of together with the emptiness of non-things. The third is, self-nature without own-being, is the emptiness called self-nature. Thus, self-nature is not made, therefore it is called self-nature. The self-nature, dharma-nature, and own-being of dharmas do not exist, it is the emptiness called self-nature, thus the self-nature of dharmas is not (349b) made by the knowledge and vision of hearers, etc., therefore it is called self-nature. In the commentary, it says: Self-nature is empty by self-nature, this is the emptiness of self-nature. Thus, if the Gelugpas abandon the established dharma, and each admits emptiness without establishing the basis of non-affirming negation, then emptiness will become non-affirming negation, saying this fault is merely slandering the noble Chandrakirti. The fourth is, whether the Buddhas appear or do not appear, in reality, the emptiness of all things is proclaimed as otherness. The true limit and suchness, that is the emptiness of otherness. The sutra says: What is the emptiness of the self-nature of other? Whether the Tathagatas appear or not, the dharma-nature of dharmas is abiding, the dharma-realm nature, the dharma-determination nature, suchness, non-other suchness, the true limit, these are abiding, not made by others. The meaning of etc. is, whether the Buddhas appear or do not appear, in reality, the reality and suchness emptiness of all things, in terms of convention, since it is not established in the nature of anything, but is constantly existing, therefore it is the supremely arising suchness.

Is that so? Because the excellent wisdom is what is to be observed, therefore it is proclaimed on other things, that is, for the reality of emptiness of all dharmas, there are two ways of expressing it in name, sound and discrimination, in terms of self-sound and other-sound, but in either case, such self-other emptiness, whether it is real, unreal, self, other, done, undone, etc., of any dharma, it is not established as its own nature, in order to establish each as empty of its own nature, first, the nature of emptiness without self-nature, the emptiness not made by the noble ones, etc. (350a), is also shown as the emptiness of its own nature. Again, the emptiness without self-nature, the emptiness not made by the noble ones, etc., is the nature of others or the supreme nature. Thus, in accordance with some sayings of the worldly dependent origination other-sect, that kind of other-emptiness is also established as the emptiness of its own nature. Or again, because it transcends samsara, what exists on the other shore is other things, that is, the ultimate limit, and the unchanging Suchness, which has the characteristic of emptiness, that is the emptiness of other things. Some Tibetans think that all dharmas are empty of their own nature as self-empty, and that other dharmas are empty as other-empty, which is unreasonable. Because there is no such thing in the meaning of the emptiness sutra, and the intention of these sutra meanings is shown to be explained in terms of Madhyamaka and Cittamātra, so the two teachers who pioneered the chariot path who received the prophecy have never said such a thing in any reliable treatise. Also, the Jonangpas say that the conventional truth is empty of its own nature, so it is self-empty, and the ultimate truth is not empty of its own nature, it is the other supreme wisdom, the Tathāgatagarbha is permanent and real, it is empty of other conventional dharmas, so it is other-empty. And they say that the Prasangika Madhyamaka who speaks of other-emptiness is the great Prasangika, and the Svatantrika Madhyamaka who speaks of self-emptiness is making the Madhyamaka doctrine poisonous. To explain it this way is to slander the meaning of the Mother of the Buddhas, because if one admits that the dharmas established as ultimate truth are not empty of their own nature, then it contradicts the definitive meaning of emptiness that the Buddha taught that all dharmas are empty, and the difference.
