Therefore, it should be criticized. Because it is said so. In the middle, it is necessary for it, because for the Bodhisattva who has already arisen and the virtue of the two accumulations, it is like water that can increase it. Even if the Bodhisattva has arisen, if it is not repeatedly irrigated with the water of compassion, then those who have not extensively accumulated the accumulations for the sake of Buddhahood will tend towards inferior Nirvana. Finally, it is necessary for it, because the disciples (40b), ordinary beings and the assembly of noble ones, regard it as a place to be enjoyed for a long time, like a ripening crop. Even if one attains the Dharmakaya for one's own benefit, if there is no Rupakaya for the benefit of others that is fully matured by compassion, then the assembly of disciples will not be able to enjoy it for a long time. Therefore, the disciples, ordinary beings and the assembly of noble ones, will fully rely on the Rupakaya for the benefit of others that is fully matured by great compassion, so that the lineage of activities will continue to increase for a long time until samsara is empty. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: Just as one lamp can produce countless lamps, although countless lamps are produced, it will not be exhausted. Similarly, one ripening can produce countless ripenings, although countless ripenings are produced, it will not be exhausted. It is said so. Because of the reasons just mentioned, at the beginning of writing the treatise, I, the teacher Chandrakirti, will praise great compassion. Secondly, praising the compassion that focuses on sentient beings, and praising the compassion that focuses on the Dharma and the non-object. The first is: First, clinging to the self as "I", and developing attachment to the things that are "mine", like a drifting bucket without autonomy, I prostrate to those who have compassion for beings. There are also three types of compassion: compassion that focuses on sentient beings, compassion that focuses on the Dharma, and compassion that is without focus, because there are these three. With discrimination, one clings to sentient beings or individuals as real, and then focuses on such sentient beings; with discrimination, one realizes that sentient beings are not real, and then focuses on only the aggregates and other Dharmas that are nominally designated as sentient beings; with discrimination, one realizes that both individuals and Dharmas (41a) are without inherent existence, and then focuses on the non-inherent existence that is merely nominally designated as sentient beings, thereby focusing on suffering and

Because of distinguishing by the aspect of wanting separation. In whose continuum do these kinds of compassion exist? According to the view that Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the selflessness of phenomena, firstly, ordinary beings; secondly, Hearers and Solitary Realizers; and thirdly, Bodhisattvas and Buddhas. If established from the perspective of philosophical schools, firstly, non-Buddhists; secondly, Realists; and thirdly, Madhyamikas. If established from the perspective of the boundaries of the Mahayana, firstly, the accumulation and application stages of the Mahayana; secondly, the seven impure grounds; and thirdly, it is asserted that they exist from the three pure grounds upwards. According to the view that Hearers and Solitary Realizers do realize the selflessness of phenomena, these two latter compassions are considered to be possessed by all noble individuals, merely because the nature of the mind is the same, but the manner of focusing and the manner of grasping are different. This world, because of clinging to self, initially with the thought of "I," clings to the non-existent self as "I am," clinging to it as true. After that, with respect to all things, whether sentient beings or non-sentient things, that are different from the object of clinging to self, the thought arises, "This is mine," and attachment to things is generated. Therefore, these beings who cling to self and what belongs to self, like a series of buckets drifting, are helplessly drifting from the Avici hell to the peak of existence in the great well of samsara, without beginning and without end, under the control of karma and afflictions. Just as the series of buckets is bound by ropes, (41b) depends on the control of the well-wheel maker, revolves in the well, naturally goes downwards, and must be pulled upwards with effort, the order of the water's beginning, middle, and end cannot be determined, and it is stirred up every day. Similarly, these beings are tightly bound by karma and afflictions, depend on the control of the moving consciousness, are made to drift from the peak of existence to the Avici hell, naturally plunge downwards into the lower realms, and must be pulled upwards with effort to reach the realms of gods and humans, the order of the beginning, middle, and end of the dependent origination of afflictions, karma, and the afflictions of birth cannot be determined, and they are defiled by the three sufferings every day, this is the example of beings in samsara. For such suffering beings, the Bodhisattva initially focuses on sentient beings with the intention of saving them with compassion.
