Therefore, just as it is universally acknowledged that calling someone a Shravaka and disciple of someone else is an undeniable common designation. All beings who attain the state of Nirvana by relying on the Three Vehicles only have the explanation of the name of Buddha, because that name is closely related to those who realize Suchness. Among those who are thus called Buddhas, one can distinguish the perfectly complete Buddha, the inferior Shravaka Arhat Buddha, and the intermediate Pratyekabuddha. Among them, the meaning of Pratyekabuddha lies in the fact that in the last life, one attains self-born wisdom without relying on a guru. Here, some people say that there are three types of Buddhas, and the Pratyekabuddha is the intermediate Buddha, which is the view of Master Chandrakirti, but this is just showing off one's own wisdom. The real Buddha, in this realm of knowable objects, is only the perfectly complete Buddha, and there is no other. Since such a Buddha is unparalleled, how can there be a second and third Buddha equal to him? If one thinks that just because Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas have the explanation of the name of Buddha, they become Buddhas themselves, then consider that a Chakravartin king with auspicious signs who renounces (38a) also has similar auspicious signs to the Buddha. If he is called a renounced Buddha Chakravartin king, then is he a Buddha? The perfectly complete Buddha is born from Bodhisattvas, because he is born from the cause of Bodhisattvas accumulating merit, purifying obscurations, and diligently practicing the path. If someone asks, isn't a Bodhisattva called a Buddha's son? Answer: Because the Buddha teaches the Dharma and acts as the empowering condition for producing Bodhisattvas, it is correct to say that they are Buddha's sons. But here, it is not contradictory that the cause of the Buddha is the Buddha's son, because the Buddha's son Bodhisattva will transform into the Buddha Bhagavan himself. Moreover, all Buddhas initially take the Buddha's son as their teacher, and rely on the power of this teacher as the cause of the empowering condition to produce the fruit of the Buddha. This way of becoming a cause should not be confused with the similar situation of cause and effect in conventional terms, and when producing the fruit, the fruit exists.

It is considered a cause in terms of what I consider to be the agent. The first factor in being a cause, that is, the bodhisattva is the cause of Buddhahood, in this treatise, this teacher does not say that it is the cause of Buddhahood like the Tathagatagarbha of the bodhisattva lineage, but rather, here, the person of the bodhisattva who accomplishes great Bodhi, is free from the three obscurations and all evil destinies, and when the wisdom of the two knowledges increases, that person is called a Buddha. Praising the bodhisattva as the cause is praising the Buddha as the fruit (38b). In order to lead all those who believe in the three vehicles into the Great Vehicle itself, therefore, the bodhisattva as the cause is praised. Just as one who wants to approach the great tree of the medicine of perfect Buddhahood must properly seek the sprout of the prince's medicine tree, this is in accordance with the metaphor and meaning. Therefore, as it is said: 'Light Protector, for example, just as one worships the waxing moon, not the waning moon. Light Protector, similarly, those who have great faith in me should pay homage to the bodhisattvas, not the tathagatas. Why is that? Because the tathagatas arise from the bodhisattvas, and all the shravakas and pratyekabuddhas arise from the tathagatas.' What is the cause that makes the bodhisattva abide there? The compassionate mind with the object aspect that will be explained, and the non-dual mind that is free from all extremes such as things and non-things, that is, wisdom, and the mind of enlightenment that is in accordance with that wisdom, wanting to attain enlightenment for the benefit of others, these are the causes of the princes. In particular, the cause for establishing a bodhisattva is the mind of enlightenment itself. In the Holy Sutra of Universal Conduct, it says: 'The bodhisattva comprehends all dharmas from the mind of enlightenment. All dharmas are equal to the realm of dharma. All dharmas that arise suddenly and do not abide are merely to be known, and because the knower is empty, they are merely to be fully known. Therefore, the bodhisattva thinks, sentient beings should comprehend such a nature of dharma.'
