Not cultivating, one should diligently strive for the means of increasing it. This means that having mindfulness and awareness constantly is like planting the seed of bodhicitta on the ground, it is easy to sprout. Therefore, those who have entered the Mahayana path should maintain their precepts without diminishing them, and gradually purify the defilements that are contrary to them, and diligently strive for the means of increasing the precious bodhicitta. That is what it says. Root text: In particular, the twenty divisions of downfall are: five for kings, such as stealing from the Three Jewels; five for ministers, such as destroying villages and towns; eight for ordinary people, such as teaching emptiness to those who have not trained their minds, and abandoning aspiration and engagement. This means that anyone of the royal lineage who has been enthroned from the crown, that is, who has become a ruler and governs the subjects, stealing or causing to be stolen the property and utensils of stupas and sangha, and not offering what should be offered to the general sangha, is the first downfall. Anyone who has faith in the path of the Shravakas and has entered it, turning them away from it, and also turning away those who have faith in the Mahayana and have entered it, is the second. Anyone who has faith in ordination, whether or not they have the signs and rituals, regardless of whether they have taken vows or broken them, stealing their food, clothing, wealth, etc., up to harming their lives, and punishing and beating their bodies, etc., is the third. Anyone of the royal lineage who knowingly kills their mother, father, or Shravaka Arhat, and causes division in the sangha, and intentionally, even if it is not the actual body of the Buddha, but any form of Buddha image, causing blood to flow with evil intent, that is, doing the work of destroying it, etc., is the fourth. Anyone of the royal lineage who does not want all the happiness and suffering of the world to arise from causes and conditions, and is distracted by the affairs of the next life, thereby leading themselves and others into the wrong path of engaging in the ten non-virtuous deeds, is the fifth. Any minister who steals the property of stupas and sangha, as well as the sangha of the four directions, is the first. Destroying villages, regions, towns, and countries is the second. Also, ministers cause Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Maha

Turning away from faith in the Dharma of Na (na), thereby abandoning and preventing it, is the third case. Furthermore, if a minister, regardless of whether anyone who has renounced for the sake of the Buddha upholds the precepts, confiscates their robes, or makes them return to lay life, or puts them in prison, or plunders their wealth, even to the point of taking their lives, this is the fourth case. Furthermore, a minister committing the five heinous crimes is the fifth case. "Village" refers to a place with only one household; "Region" refers to a place with all four castes; "City" refers to a place with eighteen kinds of artisans; "Town" refers to a place where many merchants gather; "District" refers to a place where many villages, large and small, gather. The eight vulgar actions are: misunderstanding emptiness as literal meaning, and teaching it literally even to those of inferior intellect who are frightened; praising the visible precepts of the Hearers' Vehicle to those who have entered the reasoning of the Great Vehicle, and causing them to cling to the collections of the Lesser Vehicle; praising and extolling the Great Vehicle to those who are originally of the Hearer's lineage, who inherently lack the capacity for the Great Vehicle, and who are fond of individual liberation, and forcibly causing them to enter it, thereby making them neither one nor the other; for beginners, due to their inferior motivation, who have not yet learned the thought and conduct of the Great Vehicle, causing them to abandon the path of Hearers and Solitary Realizers against their will; praising oneself and, out of jealousy, slandering others in order to seek gain and honor, hoping that others will regard oneself as an unrivaled source of merit, and falsely claiming to have realized hidden states without having realized them, deceiving others with the lies of "human Dharma gurus"; approaching kings and others with great power, plundering the wealth of monks, and committing beatings and insults; seizing offerings to the Three Jewels that have become the servants of others, receiving respect and service, through various sweet words, using them for one's own side, and consuming offerings without any regard; reducing the food and enjoyment of those who are called "renouncers and meditators," who are single-mindedly devoted to meditation, and instead giving to those who are distracted by study and contemplation, and those who engage in recitation, and causing them to abandon the yoga of practicing the Dharma, this is the eighth case. In addition to that, turning the mind towards the path of Hearers and Solitary Realizers, to achieve Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings.
