The stainless and undefiled is the sacred Dharma. The Sangha is the one who perfectly accomplishes all qualities. From the perspective of essence, the great abode of the three doors of liberation, namely the three supreme objects; and sentient beings such as the subject, all terms of refuge and the act of taking refuge, are pacified in the realm of non-aspiration, which is the refuge of the result, the unchanging vajra of one's own mind. Having realized this, one perfects the accumulation of wisdom and attains the two-fold purity of the originally pure essence, free from defilements, and with both habitual tendencies of the two obscurations purified. Furthermore, it is crucial to take refuge in the Three Jewels with heartfelt sincerity, vowing not to abandon them even at the cost of one's life. In this regard, it is essential to know what to abandon, what to accomplish, and what to harmonize, and to adopt and reject accordingly. The more respect one has for the Three Jewels, the more respect other beings will have for oneself, because the law of cause and effect is infallible. Root verses: Of the two things to be learned, cause and effect, the first is: What need is there to mention for the sake of dominion and rewards? Even for the sake of life, one should not abandon the Three Jewels. Having taken refuge in the Lama, who is the essence of that, abandon deceiving the holy ones and proclaiming infamy. Likewise, having taken refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, respectively, one should not prostrate to the gods of samsara. Do not harm others, do not associate with non-Buddhists. With faith, attend to and honor the supports of the Three Jewels, abandon forgetting the vows, and take refuge. This is the first of the two things to be learned in taking refuge, the adoption and rejection of the refuge of the cause: Even if other powerful figures such as kings say to a person who has taken refuge in the Three Jewels from the depths of their heart, "Give up this refuge, and I will grant you dominion over the territory, or give you rewards such as food, wealth, and enjoyment," one should not abandon it, what need is there to say? Even if it is certain that one will be killed if one does not abandon refuge, one should not abandon it. The Buddhas other than the Lama, who is the essence of the Three Jewels, although possessing the compassion of knowledge, love, and power, are not able to be met because one lacks the fortune to be taught by them. If one does not rely on the Lama and only relies on one's own strength, one will not be able to benefit oneself. At this time, the essence of the Three Jewels

The Lama, his body is the Sangha, his speech is the sacred Dharma, and his mind is the Buddha. Therefore, it is taught that even deceiving the noble Lama and proclaiming unpleasant words should be abandoned. Similarly, having taken refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, one should not prostrate to the chief deities of cyclic existence, such as oneself and one's disciples, whether they are appropriate or not, nor to local deities, nor harm any other sentient beings. One should not associate with those who are called Tirthikas (non-Buddhists) who revile cause and effect. These are the three things to be abandoned. Even for small representations of body, speech, and mind, one should serve with faith and reverence, and take refuge without forgetting the Three Jewels day and night. This is what is said. Root text: The fruit's discipline, the Thubpa's (Buddha's) Dharmakaya, having awakened in the realm of separation, attainment, and abandonment, does not grasp at protectors and those to be protected, beyond mere convention, therefore the cause of abandonment is also a superimposed imputation. This means that realizing the nature of the mind by one's own power, and understanding that the Three Jewels do not arise from other continuums, is the refuge of the fruit. Like knowing the nature of various images appearing in a mirror, knowing the difference in the meaning of mental events is the refuge of the cause. Therefore, the fruit's discipline, the Thubpa's Dharmakaya, when the mind and mental events are pacified in the Dharmadhatu, there is no perception of the protectors, the Three Jewels, and the sentient beings to be protected. Therefore, the limit of abandoning the discipline is merely conventional. Root text: The limit of abandoning the cause, the characteristic of taking refuge, is abandoning due to the arising of wrong views towards the object of refuge. If the discipline is weakened, one falls into inferiority, therefore, like the scab of a wound, one should guard it diligently. This means that the limit of abandoning the vows of the refuge of the cause is abandoning from the heart due to the arising of wrong views towards the Three Jewels, and abandoning the discipline of taking refuge. Moreover, if the discipline of taking refuge is weakened, one will fall into inferiority, such as the ranks of the helpless and unprotected, or the practices of non-Buddhists. Therefore, one should diligently guard the discipline like the scab of a wound on the body. This is what is said. Root text: The wolf of karma's tongue, with its viciousness, seeks opportunities, in the evil vessel of dualistic mind that confuses words and meanings, it diminishes the sign of unwavering certainty. If one relies on pretas (hungry ghosts), one will decline in this very life. This means that in this land of Tibet, the name of the Three Jewels
