Similarly, just as a vast river, the Ālayavijñāna (store consciousness) completely relies on and abides in this. If only the proximate cause (upādānahetu) for the arising of eye consciousness is present, then eye consciousness alone will arise. If the proximate causes for the arising of two, three, or five consciousnesses are present, then two, three, or up to five consciousnesses will arise. It is just as it is said in the scriptures. Similarly, it is said in the scriptures: 'The consciousness that takes is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a river. It is not permissible to grasp at a self, this I have not taught to children.' Just as the objective conditions (ālambana-pratyaya) of each consciousness are definite, they are not immediately preceding conditions (anantara-pratyaya). Because the arising of all consciousnesses, when the objective condition that matches the immediately preceding condition of all consciousnesses is encountered, two or more consciousnesses arise from one immediately preceding condition, and this is not contradictory. The arising of mind consciousness (manovijñāna) is always present. It can arise simultaneously with eye consciousness or not. Except for the two cases of non-perception (asaṃjñā) and cessation (nirodha-samāpatti), and the five cases of mindless sleep and fainting, it always arises continuously. So, how does mind arise again from a mindless state? It arises from the Ālayavijñāna. These three transformed consciousnesses (pariṇāma-vijñāna) are as it is said in the scriptures: 'The unreal imagination (abhūta-parikalpa) is mind and mental factors, the three realms.' It is not conceptualization, but in a fabricated way, the mind and mental factors of the three realms, and whatever is considered to be the container world, self, aggregates, realms, etc., are not its essence. Therefore, consciousness, like dreams, illusions, Gandharva cities, dizziness, etc., arises even without different objective objects. Therefore, after the previous consciousness ceases, consciousness arises from the consciousness of the same kind as it. All dharmas of the three realms and the unconditioned (asaṃskṛta-dharma) are established as merely consciousness. The consciousness that can produce all dharmas, that is, the Ālayavijñāna with all seeds. When eye consciousness and others operate to nourish their own cognitive abilities, it makes the ability of the Ālayavijñāna special. Since eye consciousness arises from the Ālayavijñāna, through mutual interaction, this conceptualization (vikalpa) will in that way, after that, transform into other states. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, the appearances of forms and so on arise. The seeds of karma from wholesome, unwholesome, and unwavering minds manifest future bodies, accumulating the grasping and the grasper. The habitual tendencies formed by previous lives ripen in this life and then are exhausted, giving rise to the subsequent maturation of the ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness). Furthermore, attachment to the grasped as being separate from consciousness is the grasping of the grasped. The consciousness that cognizes and grasps it is the grasping of the grasper. The seeds of future grasping and grasper of the same kind, which are conditioned by the grasping and grasper of the past, are the habitual tendencies of the two graspings. The differences in the bodies of different beings are due to the distinctions in the habitual tendencies of karma, just as different sprouts arise from different seeds. The habitual tendencies of the two graspings, which generate the body, become cooperative companions, like water for a sprout. Thus, there is no other maturation apart from the ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness), and there is an ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness) apart from eye consciousness and so on, which is the seed of all things. How is this established? In the scriptures, the Buddha said in the Abhidharma: 'The realm of beginningless time is the basis of all dharmas. Because of its existence, all beings and nirvāṇa can be attained.' The reasoning is also like this: if there were no ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness), entering and reversing saṃsāra (cyclic existence) would be impossible. Entering refers to rebirth in accordance with one's kind, and reversing refers to nirvāṇa with remainder and without remainder. If there were no ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness), consciousness could not arise from the condition of formation. If there were no consciousness conditioned by formation, it would be impossible to enter saṃsāra (cyclic existence). If there were no ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness), then the consciousness of rebirth, or the six consciousnesses driven by formation, would be shown to arise from the condition of formation. However, formation is not considered a condition for the consciousness of rebirth, because it has long since ceased. Similarly, after a state of cessation of mind, mind cannot arise because at that time, mind driven by formation cannot arise. Reversing saṃsāra (cyclic existence) depends on afflictions and karma, with afflictions being the main factor. If afflictions are abandoned, saṃsāra (cyclic existence) can be reversed. If there is no ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness), it is impossible to abandon afflictions, because liberation is not achieved by abandoning manifest afflictions alone; the seeds must be abandoned. What are those seeds? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
