Collected Teachings of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo MP189 Thirty Verses Commentary 12-11-1a Commentary on Thirty Verses 12-11-1b In Sanskrit: Trishika Karika. In Tibetan: Commentary on Thirty Verses. Homage to youthful Manjushri! In order to abandon the two obscurations on the path to liberation and omniscience, to explain the two aspects of selflessness, and to understand the tenets of the Mind-Only school, I compose this treatise. Furthermore, it is also to refute the two extremes of thinking that knowable objects are one substance with consciousness, and that consciousness, like knowable objects, exists only conventionally but not ultimately. Therefore, all imputations of 'I' and 'phenomena' are not established as external objects, but are merely mind. The imputations of 'I' and 'phenomena,' that is, the imputations of various 'I's, life, creator, etc., and the imputations of aggregates, elements, sense bases, etc., as 'phenomena'—all these are merely consciousness; there is nothing other than that. 'Becoming' means that the moment the cause ceases, the moment of the result is obtained simultaneously. Due to the increased habit of conceptualizing 'I' and 'phenomena,' the alaya-consciousness appears as 'I' and 'phenomena.' Although they do not exist externally, due to the power of beginningless habituation, they are imputed as 'I' and 'phenomena' as if they exist. Thus, although they are not other than mind, they are completely imputed as if they are other. However, if there is no basis for imputation, imputation is impossible. Therefore, Bhadanta asserts that there are objects that have become consciousness externally. All knowable objects are completely imputed, so there are no real objects. Consciousness is interdependent, so it is asserted to be real. The phrase 'becoming interdependent' indicates that even 'becoming,' there is no 'I' and 'phenomena' externally, but three aspects are imputed on the apprehended aspect of the mind: the alaya-consciousness, maturation; the afflicted mind that thinks about it; and the six consciousnesses that cognize objects. The first is the alaya-consciousness, which exists as the cause and effect of all phenomena and is interconnected, hence it is 'alaya' (Tibetan: ཀུན་གཞི, Sanskrit Devanagari: āalaya, Sanskrit Romanization: ālaya, Chinese literal meaning: storehouse). It matures from previous seeds and is the seed of all defilements or all phenomena, that is, the maturation of karma in all realms, beings, birthplaces, and lineages. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: What are its object and aspect? Answer: The Alaya (kunjishi, the basis of everything) is the place for taking the imprints of perceiving self (bdag, ego) and phenomena (chos, things), the place of receiving (lenpa, accepting) and abiding (gnas, remaining). Although there are imprints of consciousness (rnampar rigpa, awareness), merely experiencing it does not recognize (mirigpa, not understanding) it. Because it focuses on objects without distinction between internal and external, its aspect is extremely subtle. Even though the object is the vast external world, sentient beings, and the container world, because there is no distinction, the aspect is so subtle that it cannot be perceived. Question: With which mental factors does it associate? Answer: It is always associated with contact (regpa, touch), attention (yid la jedpa, attention), feeling (tshorba, sensation), perception ('dushes, cognition), and intention (semspa, intention), inseparable from the five omnipresent mental factors (kun 'gro lnga, five universal mental activities). Regarding the feeling (tshorba, sensation) of the Alaya, it is neutral (btang snyoms, equanimity) because it is not completely differentiated. The Alaya is not obscured by the near afflictions (nye nyon, secondary afflictions) and is not categorized as either virtuous or non-virtuous. The contact and other factors associated with it are also like the Alaya, having the same object and aspect. The Alaya flows continuously like a river, without interruption for a moment. Only when the state of Arhat (dgrachom, conqueror of enemies, referring to a saint who has exhausted afflictions) is attained will the Alaya cease, because all the causes of bad rebirths in the Alaya have been completely abandoned. The Alaya consciousness abides in consciousness and clings to 'I', which is called afflicted mind (nyon yid, defiled mind). Which consciousness has the nature of thinking 'I'? It is obscured, not categorized as virtuous or non-virtuous, and constantly accompanied by the four afflictions (nyon mongs bzhi, four defilements). What are these four afflictions? They are: the view of self (bdag tu lta ba, the view that there is a self, i.e., Sakaya-drishti), the ignorance of self (bdag tu rmongs pa, ignorance of self, i.e., ignorance), the pride of self (bdag rgyal, the pride of thinking 'I am'), and the love of self (bdag la chags par 'dushes pa, attachment or clinging to self). Furthermore, it is said: 'Ignorance and the view of self, pride and love of self, these four, make the Alaya an afflicted mind, which is the nature of thinking 'I', and is also the cause of inversion. This mind is the companion of those afflictions, and when the mind is neither virtuous nor non-virtuous, it is always the cause of clinging to 'I'.' This is quoted from the explanation of the 'Steadfast Intellect Treatise'. Whichever of the three realms (khams gsum, desire realm, form realm, formless realm) it is born in, it belongs to that realm. Apart from these four afflictions, the five omnipresent mental factors such as contact are also associated with it, so it is associated with nine mental factors. These mental factors also belong to the realm in which they are born. The Arhat (dgrachom, conqueror of enemies) has abandoned all afflictions, so there is no afflicted mind. Similarly, there is no afflicted mind in cessation meditation ('gogpa'i snyompar 'jugpa, an advanced state of meditation). In the path that transcends the world ('jig rten las 'daspa'i lam, the path that transcends samsara), when practicing no-self (bdag medpa, no self), there is also no afflicted mind. This is the second transformation. The third transformation is: objects, namely form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
