'Please tell me, how does one understand the profound meaning of mantra?' If you are unwilling to elaborate on the profound meaning of mantra, then listen to me as I explain how I, Brahma-Earth Flower (Tshangs pa sa yi me tog, name of Brahma), heard it from Vajradhara (rDo rje 'dzin pa, Vajradhara).’ Having raised this question, he further stated: ‘If one thoroughly understands the meaning of the three suchness (de nyid gsum, three realities) of Bodhicitta (Byang chub kyi sems, mind of enlightenment), oneself, mantra, and recitation, then one will become a vessel for accomplishment (dngos grub, siddhi). If one does not understand these well, then what accomplishment can you attain by relying on mantra? You will attain nothing.’ Furthermore, if I ask you, ‘From the vidyā-mantra (rig sngags, vidyā-mantra), is the accomplished one of vidyā-mantra (rigs ngags grub pa po, vidyā-mantra siddha) another person? Or are they unified as one?’ If you say either of the two, what fault do you think there would be? If the vidyā-mantra and its accomplished one are different, then because there is no connection, it will never be accomplished. However, if one thinks they are not other, merely holding the vidyā-mantra will make one an accomplished one. If, according to your view, they are not other, then because you hold the vidyā-mantra, its accomplishment is also inseparable from you, and you have already become an accomplished one of vidyā-mantra. Then, go to the sky right now without any obstruction! If the vidyā-mantra and its power (accomplishment) are not other, and the one who experiences the accomplishment is also inseparable from the one who holds the vidyā-mantra, then, logically speaking, although one has already achieved accomplishment, why can't one walk in the sky, or why are there no other manifestations of the merits of mantra accomplishment? If one admits that the mantra and its accomplishment are one, this is purely a lie, just like a cowherd who does not understand reason, who can only babble nonsense at will. For a wise person who understands reason, this cannot be considered words that should be spoken. At that time, the one named Immortal Brahma Great Priest (mi 'chi ba tshangs pa chen po pha mchod), after contemplating on his own, replied: 'Just as Brahma-Earth Flower Manifestor (Tshangs pa sa yi me tog 'char byed), who is the lord of beings (mi mjed kyi bdag po), said, if the vidyā-mantra and its accomplishment are other, then I (bdag, self), who recites the vidyā-mantra, will never attain accomplishment. However, from the vidyā-mantra, its accomplishment is not other...' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the accomplishment arising from reciting mantras belongs to me, the reciter of the mantra, is that correct? If so, what fault would there be? I think there is no fault. But if one thinks that way, what conflict is there? Then, Brahma Sarojamali (梵天萨热迦玛丽,Brahma Lotus Garland) said: 'Alas! Brahma Immortal, your thought is so bad, full of defilements.' Although you say so, Brahma Sarojamali, who possesses wisdom, after careful consideration, finds that every word of yours is full of unreasonable faults. Because you think that the accomplishment arising from the mantra is external to you, therefore you have no accomplishment. And the non-external mantra is the cause of accomplishment, therefore the mantra and the accomplishment are not other, the mantra is the accomplishment. To say such a thing is simply madness. As said before, the mantra and its accomplishment are not other, merely holding the mantra can achieve accomplishment, just like holding fire can burn. If holding the mantra does not reveal accomplishment, how can one say they are one? Even if there is a mantra but no accomplishment, how can one say they are not different? One exists, one does not exist, how can this be said to be one? Therefore, there is no accomplishment at all, the mantra and the accomplishment become other. Then, Brahma Immortal said: 'Lord of beings,' he called out to the great Brahma Sarojamali, 'How do you ascertain that the accomplishments obtained from secret mantras and vidya-mantras are true and not deceptive? As the lamp of wisdom, please explain to me how to obtain benefit.' The great Brahma Sarojamali replied: 'If I analyze, the mantra and its accomplishment are neither other nor non-other. Since it is neither other nor non-other, therefore, accomplishment can be obtained through the mantra. I think that the practitioner repeatedly contemplates the mantra, and after a long time of practice, will eventually become powerful and obtain accomplishment. The nature of phenomena appearing due to the power of causes and conditions is difficult to measure in other ways, but it is true and not deceptive.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
