Definition of the sound of words: If it is the meaning that one understands and expresses, it is a lump composed of eight kinds of particles. For example, like the sound of "Snow Mountain (Mount Kailash)". Distinguishing the meaning to be expressed from the perspective of expression, there are two types: words expressing dharma and words expressing entities possessing dharma. The definition of the first type is that it enables understanding of the meaning to be expressed by abandoning other characteristics of the meaning to be expressed that one understands, as a way of expressing one's own meaning. For example, like the sound of "a cow is not a horse." The definition of words expressing entities possessing dharma is that it enables understanding of the meaning to be expressed without abandoning other characteristics of the meaning to be expressed that one understands, as a way of expressing one's own meaning. For example, like the sound of "a cow is not a horse." Distinguishing the expresser from the perspective of determination, there are three types: words of non-possessive determination, words of other-possessive determination, and words of impossible determination. The order of the definitions is as follows: expressing by connecting immediately after the characteristic of the suffix; expressing by connecting immediately after the basis of the characteristic; expressing by connecting immediately after the existence of the action. The order of the examples is as follows: like the sound of expressing "the black buttocks are agile"; like the sound of expressing "only existence can establish, the buttocks are agile"; like the sound of expressing "only blue exists on the lotus." Distinguishing the expresser from the perspective of the time of speaking, there are two types: the expresser of attachment and the actual expresser derived from it. The latter is like the general sound of a vase. Distinguishing the expresser of attachment, there are two types: the actual expresser of attachment and the implied expresser of attachment. The order of the examples is as follows: relative to the vase being impermanent and the vase not being permanent, like the sound of "the vase is impermanent." Incidentally mentioning letters and persons, the definition of a letter is that although a single one cannot express meaning, a sound with multiple moments that can express meaning when two or more gather together. The categories are: vowel letters such as a, i, etc., and consonant letters such as ka, kha, etc. The definition of a person is a designation imputed to the continuous aggregation of the five aggregates or four aggregates. For example, like Devadatta. This is said in the context of not having attained Buddhahood. Wisdom, intelligence, and knowledge are synonymous, and the definition has been explained earlier.

I. Divisions: valid cognition (pramana), non-valid cognition, conceptual thought, non-conceptual thought, mistaken and not mistaken, self-awareness, other-awareness, mind and mental factors, etc. The definition of valid cognition is: a consciousness that newly cognizes its own object. Therefore, the meaning of "valid cognition is a non-deceptive consciousness" is not merely non-deceptive, but in order to know that it is like this new cognition, the phrase "it clarifies what was not known" clarifies the meaning of the previous text. So what is the meaning of "also"? Regarding the meaning of the previous text, not only is there no fault of not pervading nominal valid cognition, but there is also no fault of being too pervasive of conventional consciousness. That is its meaning. The definition of non-valid cognition: a consciousness that does not newly cognize its own object. Divisions: determinate cognition, mistaken cognition, doubt, attention, and unclear appearance, these five. The definition of determinate cognition: a consciousness that can cut off superimposition on an object that has already been cognized by the previous valid cognition that leads it, and whose function has not disappeared. Divisions: determinate cognition led by direct valid cognition and determinate cognition led by inferential valid cognition. Examples, in order: such as the consciousness that ascertains blue, led by the direct sense perception that initially apprehends, and the consciousness that ascertains sound is impermanent, led by the inferential valid cognition that knows sound is impermanent. Subsequent direct perceptions led by direct valid cognition are also determinate cognitions. The definition of mistaken cognition: a consciousness that apprehends what is not that as that. Divisions: such as the conceptual thought that apprehends sound as permanent. There are two types: conceptual mistaken cognition and non-conceptual mistaken cognition, such as sense perception with a double moon appearance. The definition of doubt: a consciousness that clings to an object without certainty. Divisions: doubt is divided into two types: prior cause and latent. The first is further divided into: equally divided clinging and predominantly divided clinging. The first is like: thinking whether sound is permanent or impermanent. The second is divided into: doubt with changing meaning and doubt with unchanging meaning. For example, in order: such as the consciousness that thinks sound is mostly impermanent. Latent doubt is divided into: not relying on a sign and relying on a sign. For example, in order: such as the consciousness that thinks there is water in the well, and all consciousnesses that rely on an uncertain sign. The definition of unclear appearance: the self-characteristic appears, but it cannot cut off superimposition on it. Divisions: appearing due to the cause of confusion.
