Having spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti said to the venerable Shariputra: "Alas! Venerable Shariputra, if a great bodhisattva engages in intercourse with a mother, that is engaging with something without essence! Why is that? Venerable Shariputra, a mother is without essence." And so forth, with these words, the conceptualization based on the substantial existence of a person is blocked. Likewise, in this suchness, nothing will remain, and since there is no one who will remain in it and fully awaken to unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, what need is there to speak of remaining in it and teaching the Dharma? Because it is without abiding." Thus it was said, blocking all noble beings, and this is from the perspective of an antidote. The second part has three points: debate, answer, and refutation of the debate in the answer. The first point has two parts: the debate on the place where substantial conceptualization exists: Are not all dharmas without self, and are not such dharmas also realized by ordinary beings? In that case, it will not be fully covered by the first establishment of the conceptualization of grasping. That is the debate. The debate on the place where imputed conceptualization exists: Noble ones also have such things, for example, monks, after the night has passed until morning, I heard the sound of a jackal making a sound, and so forth. Likewise, was it not said that at that time, at that time, I became the king of beasts, a lion with limbs not maimed, and so forth? In that case, it will not be fully covered by the second establishment of the conceptualization of grasping. That is the debate. The meaning of these two is: the grasping of ordinary beings is not fully covered by substantial conceptualization, because they also realize that all dharmas are without self, and they also realize that there is no substance of sentient beings. The grasping of noble ones is not fully covered by imputed grasping, because they also say "I," so there is self-grasping. The second point is: those are aspiration and attention, but here it is intended to speak of attention to suchness itself, so there is no essence. Those words are conventional truth, not ultimate truth, so there is no essence. The meaning of these two is: ordinary beings know that all dharmas are without self, that is, they realize that the self is merely imputed through aspiration and attention,

The explanation regarding the imputation to the noble ones is that the debate that arises from considering the self as merely imputed through the suchness-oriented mental engagement is meaningless. The words of the noble ones, such as "I at that time," are conventional expressions taught as a means for others to understand, but they are not spoken because of the existence of an inherently existent self-grasping. Therefore, the debate is meaningless. These responses to the arguments of Nyinang also appear in the Ornament of Realization. Now, it is unreasonable that the noble ones speak of the conceptualization of the imputation of a person in the continuum of those on the path of application, and here also speak of that conceptualization in what is to be abandoned by seeing, and it would become contradictory to not accept the conceptualization of grasping at substance in what is to be abandoned by meditation. If it is said that the first grasping conceptualization is only for ordinary beings and the second is only for noble ones, then some answer this by saying that such an explanation is for grasping at substance and grasping at imputation, but the two conceptualizations are the conceptualizations that take those two graspings as their objects, so it is not referring to that. This is very unreasonable, because during the debate, it was argued that the characteristics of the first and second conceptualizations are not all-pervasive, and in the root text, it was also clearly stated that the two conceptualizations exist in both ordinary beings and noble ones, so this debate arose, and if the debate is not directed at the conceptualizations, then it will not be relevant to the context. Furthermore, the noble ones said that there is no explanation of grasping at substance in what is to be abandoned by meditation. Therefore, the statement that ordinary beings and what is to be abandoned by seeing have the latter conceptualization, because the imputation of grasping is divided into two from the perspective of two mental engagements, is made according to the power of the aspiration-oriented mental engagement. The intention of what was said to the noble ones in the root text refers to the suchness-oriented mental engagement. The term grasping at substance is not used for what is to be abandoned by meditation. Shantipa explained that the places where these two exist are definite, as it is said: "The conceptualization of grasping, which relies on sentient beings existing as substances, is for ordinary beings, because they have not abandoned it, and it is not for noble ones, because they have abandoned it, and because it is the occasion for what is to be abandoned by seeing. And, the second conceptualization of grasping, which relies on sentient beings existing as imputations, is for noble ones, because the hearers and solitary buddhas have not abandoned it, and ordinary beings have the first one from the beginning." This also explains the path of application.
