For the first six, it is dreaming, and the seventh can be combined with either dreaming or wakefulness, and for the remainder, neither of these two terms is used. Some consider the first five, except for the fifth, to be dreaming, the fifth and seventh to be both, and the last five to be signs of wakefulness. Buddhaśrī, however, considers the first six, then two, and the last four to be signs of dreaming, both, and wakefulness, respectively. Secondly, it is the distinction of the state of attaining the summit of the realization of heat (Sanskrit: ūṣmagata, Romanized Sanskrit: usmagata, meaning "heat"), which is a sign symbolizing the newly attained. The twelve signs that are affixed to the end of each word "where" are these. Where are they? The first sign is that a bodhisattva who has attained the summit of heat, the dharma of yoga grasped by skillful means and wisdom, not only during the day but also in dreams, sees all dharmas as dreamlike, and from images to cities of gandharvas (Sanskrit: gandharvanagara, Romanized Sanskrit: gandharvanagara, meaning "city of gandharvas"), but does not abandon the intention to benefit sentient beings, and therefore does not manifest the ultimate limit. If a great bodhisattva, even in a dream, sees all dharmas as dreamlike, sees all dharmas as like images, like illusions, like mirages, like apparitions, like cities of gandharvas, but does not manifest them, then, Subhuti, this should be understood as the characteristic of non-regression of a non-regressing great bodhisattva. Thus it is said. The reason for being able to do so in a dream is that one has become very familiar with the yoga of skillful means and wisdom, and this applies to all the signs of dreams. Secondly, at the beginning of all the words "skillful means and wisdom," etc., and "even in dreams," etc., to all except the last four. Śrāvakas, etc., do not generate a mind that delights in attaining the ground of a pratyekabuddha and the three realms. These two and the former are the essence of skillful means and wisdom, the main part of the signs. Thirdly, the main one, and so forth, sees that he is surrounded by hundreds of thousands of crores of attendants and teaches the Dharma, and thus attains the Dharma that is in accordance. In the Aṣṭasāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā, it is said that one appears as the Tathāgata himself and sees that he is surrounded by attendants. Fourthly, the Buddha rises into the sky and teaches the Dharma to the sangha of monks, and focuses on the magical display of emanations, which is a manifestation of miraculous powers. These two, the former and the latter, are the refuge itself and its ult

This is a sign of showing familiarity with (emptiness). The fifth is that even in a dream, when seeing a terrifying place, if one knows that one is dreaming and is not afraid of it, then after waking up, one will also generate the mind to teach the three realms as being like a dream. This is a sign of knowing that it is a dream in the dream. The sixth is that when seeing sentient beings in the hells and other evil realms, by guiding them, one remembers abandoning the evil realms in the Buddha-field where one will attain Buddhahood in the future. This is a sign of purifying one's own Buddha-field. The seventh is that whether in a dream or while awake, when seeing cities and other things burning, if through any signs or marks, one has the signs and marks of a great Bodhisattva who does not turn back, one should say: "By the truth and the words of truth, may the burning of cities and so on be pacified, cooled, and disappear." In this way, the blessing of truth that completely pacifies those burnings is accomplished, and there is no arrogance. Here, the sutra says that if some houses and streets are burning and some are not, then those sentient beings will experience the ripening of the karma of accumulating the abandonment of the Dharma. In the Eight Thousand Verse Prajnaparamita Sutra, it is said that if one cannot completely pacify and it appears mixed with unpredicted things, then that Bodhisattva will experience the remaining ripening of the karma of accumulating the abandonment of the Dharma. The eighth is that in a dream or while awake, when seeing non-humans such as yakshas and flesh-eaters harming other sentient beings, if one has been predicted by the Tathagatas and is free from the mind of hearers and solitary realizers, and will attain Buddhahood, one should say: "By the truth and the words of truth, may this (sentient being) seized by non-humans be released." In this way, the words of truth that make those non-humans disappear are accomplished, and there is no arrogance in him. This one and the previous one are both pacifying the harm of whether sentient beings are sentient or not, and are signs of being under the power of magical power. Here, the sutra says that if, due to the power of Mara, the non-human disappears and arrogance arises in the mind, then it is called unpredicted. Just as there are two situations of turning back and not turning back after the non-human disappears, there are also two situations of the fire being pacified by the power of Mara and the power of the Bodhisattva, and one should also distinguish between turning back and not turning back for those two situations. In that way, it will become four situations: for those who do not turn back, the fire has not completely subsided, and conversely
