For the sake of that, this mother is the great Prajnaparamita. Thus it is said. The second is divided into two: the cause of purity and the essence of purity. The first is divided into three, the first being: In the sequence of the path of cultivation, the nature of the second purity, which is without outflows, is proclaimed. How does one obtain the pure path of cultivation through the acceptance of favorable conditions and the abandonment of unfavorable conditions? What are the causes for its arising and the causes for its non-arising? To dispel such doubts, it is first spoken. The connection of the sutra is: From where does this faith in this profound Prajnaparamita mother arise? From where does one enter into perfect enlightenment? From where does one serve the Tathagatas? From where does one practice the six perfections? Thus, it is the answer to Shariputra's question to the Buddha. The second is: The root of the path of cultivation and the path of seeing, which are beyond the world, is faith, and its cause is serving the Buddhas, etc., as stated in the Sutra of Pure Conduct. The third is divided into two: the cause of arising and the cause of non-arising. The first is: The cause of the arising of the pure path of cultivation is purity. Why? Divided into three, the first being: To please by serving countless Buddhas for a long time, that is, the great Bodhi comes here and arises after serving immeasurable and countless Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas of the ten directions of the world. Thus it is said. The second is: To perfect the perfections such as generosity, that is, the great Bodhi, from the first arising of the mind, practices the perfection of generosity for countless hundreds of millions of billions of eons, and becomes associated with the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment. Thus it is said. The third is: When practicing the six perfections, being skilled in the cultivation of quiescence free from elaboration, realizing non-attachment, that is, the great Bodhi, from the first arising of the mind, takes hold of this profound Prajnaparamita mother and strives in a way that is non-attached. Thus it is said. The second is: The cause of lacking the Mahayana Dharma, or the cause of the non-arising of the pure path of cultivation, is impurity. Why? Divided into four, the first being: Because one has not accumulated merit in the past, one is oppressed by the thick darkness of Mara, that is, one is harmed by Mara and controlled by him. The second is: The Mahayana

Due to not studying lineage, one does not believe in the profound Dharma of freedom from elaboration. Third, due to not being accustomed to the meaning of selflessness in the Dharma, one grasps aggregates, etc., as real, which is attachment. Fourth, due to not associating with virtuous spiritual friends, one associates with unwholesome friends and is influenced by them. These foolish individuals will be blessed by demons, and will not have faith in the profound Dharmas, nor will they develop confidence, and they will become attached to aggregates, etc. Because they fall into the hands of evil friends, they will become beings with hateful conduct, praising themselves and disparaging others. If one possesses these four conditions, then these foolish individuals will abandon this profound Mother Sutra. Thus it is said. These are the intentions stated in the Sutra as merely the favorable and unfavorable conditions for the Prajnaparamita Sutra, which the treatises apply to the path of meditation, and it is pure as the noble ones and teachers believe. It can be understood sequentially. The reason for this application is that this purity is more important than other paths and the Prajnaparamita Sutra of the scriptures, so it is shown as the main cause. Shantideva considers the fifth and sixth branches of practice to be the cause of faith, and the seventh to be the cause of abandonment, that is, the seven branches of practice, and this treatise applies practice to the path of meditation. The second is divided into two aspects: generally explaining purity, and specifically explaining it. The first is divided into three aspects, the first of which is that after explaining the favorable conditions for obtaining it and the unfavorable conditions for not obtaining it, the essence of purity, which is the subject at hand, is then explained. How is it? In general, it is taught without distinguishing the purity of the noble ones. Here, it is not considered that the naturally pure and the temporarily free from defilements taught below are the general and specific meanings, because here also the temporarily free from defilements is taught. The second is that the purity of the result is the purity from form, etc., up to omniscience. Why? Because the purity of the result and form, etc., are not different and cannot be separated. Therefore, in short, the purity of form, etc., is called the purity of the result. Whatever is the purity of form is the purity of the result. Thus it is said up to omniscience.
