It is said that one should attain the most excellent dharmas. The two excellent ones are, in order, the generation of bodhicitta at the time of the cause and the great vehicle of cause and effect arising from it, holding it as the supreme essence, and virtuous friends and bodhicitta, etc., are explained in the adornment appearance. The second has two: the basis for the arising of the path knowledge, and the basis is the distinction of the path knowledge. The first is: it becomes dim, like something with stains. By what? By the light of the tathāgatagarbha, that is, the light of the fruition of the two accumulations. Where? Among the gods and others, such as the nāgas and gandharvas, the light of the fruition of contaminated virtue. For what purpose? For the path and so on. How does making it dim accomplish the ability to generate path knowledge? For the six desire realm gods and the form realm beings, in order, protecting the world, and having great enjoyment, and not having to fight with the asuras, and dwelling in loving-kindness, and self-emanation, and enjoying others' emanations, and having individual pride such as obtaining samādhi, and in common, their own bodies are beautiful and have light, so those who have pride based on that are subdued by the light of the tathāgata, and by pacifying the pride. If there is a need for the light to become dim for the purpose of generating path knowledge, what is the need? The need to show that doing so for that purpose is: all subsequent learners will only generate the realization of path knowledge in the continuum of destroying pride, so if you want path knowledge to arise in the continuum, you must abandon pride, and it is done to know this. That is, both pride and depression must be eliminated, and it will not arise if one has either one, just as in the Manifestation Sutra, how King Śuddhodana generated the path. Here, the gods are not depressed and have pride, so it is said that it must be abandoned. That is just a symbol, and whatever is more dominant, such as attachment, should be abandoned. In order to accomplish that the light becoming dim is the basis of path knowledge, and because of showing it in this way, it will be known that one must abandon pride in order to generate path knowledge. The sutra showing the greatness of light speaks of the basis of path knowledge.

It is considered so. How to understand it? Through the implication of words, that is, indirectly. The second part, like the root verses, has three situations. The first situation is further divided into two. The first is: The Wisdom of the Path is the object of the Great and Small Vehicles, that is, the basis is determined separately. Because the Wisdom of the Path only arises in the continuum of Bodhisattvas, and does not arise in the continuum of Hearers and Solitary Realizers. The reason for this is that the Wisdom of the Path only arises when the mind of enlightenment with emptiness and great compassion as its core arises. This is a universal rule. Because one has not generated the mind of enlightenment there, one is not qualified to abide in the mother of the Wisdom of the Path. Moreover, it is not only necessary to destroy pride, but also to generate the mind of enlightenment. The second is: Through the path of the inner teachings, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers who are free from desire for the three realms, and the yogis of the outer teachings on the other side have already become Buddhas. All beings will ultimately attain the ultimate fruit of unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment, that is, sentient beings, because of this reason. Moreover, it is not only what the former practiced. In the "Clear Words," it is said: "The noble Hearers and Solitary Buddhas who are free from desire have arisen from the realm of peace." The Bodhisattvas on the other side are from now on. Although it is said that these two types of individuals have been practicing from those times, there is no doubt about the Bodhisattvas, and the key to "all beings" is that if it is explained as before, it is the author's intention. If the great Hearers and Solitary Realizers enter the Great Vehicle, does it contradict the statement that the three vehicles are distinct? The establishment of the three vehicles of Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and the Great Vehicle as distinct is intentional and provisional, not definitive with self-nature, because it comes from the scriptures. Therefore, there is no fault. From which scripture does it come? From the "White Lotus Sutra": "In the future, Shariputra, you will also become a Tathagata, named Lotus Light, with all eyes, taming hundreds of thousands of millions of beings." And "The vehicle is one, there is no second." And the "Lankavatara Sutra" also says: "Mahamati, the practitioners of the Hearer Vehicle are not liberated by the Hearer Vehicle, but they are ultimately those who go to the Great Vehicle." There are three points to the marginal analysis of this: How to view the three vehicles as definitive and provisional, from where do Hearers and Solitary Realizers enter the Great Vehicle, and whether there is an end to samsara. The first point is divided into two: Definitive and Provisional.
