It is called affliction. This is the meaning (in the scripture). Answer: Although it is not a real affliction, the reason for calling it by its name is that it has the same function as affliction. Affliction binds beings to the three realms, and this (the bodhisattva's action) also binds beings to the three realms. The harm to the real (affliction) is that (the bodhisattva's) mind cannot be defiled by affliction. Thus it is said. The wise sea (teacher) explains it this way: Like this, with afflictions of this nature, the bodhisattva binds beings to the three realms. "The three realms also arise from affliction." And, "As long as it binds beings to the three realms, it is not because the mind is defiled by affliction." That's how it is said. The necessity of naming is: Although it is not explicitly stated in the scriptures, it is because it shows that the bodhisattva is completely for the benefit of others. In order to benefit others, they take birth in samsara, so it should be known that afflictions are not abandoned for their own benefit. Second, it comes from the Garland of Jewels Sutra: As it is said: "World Honored One, just as with the cause of taking, the three existences arise from the cause of contaminated karma, similarly, World Honored One, with the cause of the ground of ignorance habit, the three mind-made bodies of arhats, solitary buddhas, and empowered bodhisattvas arise from the cause of uncontaminated karma." This (passage) also does not admit that contaminated karma is affliction. The ground of ignorance habit, from the Compendium: It is the subtle evil place of contamination, which is said to be uniquely eliminated by the wisdom of the Tathagata. For this, the ancient teachers said: Just like a container that has contained ghee, even if there is no ghee inside, it will still smell of ghee, even if afflictions and secondary afflictions have been eliminated, there are still habits that serve as their basis. Uncontaminated karma refers to the mind that is not mixed with afflictions but becomes the cause of samsara, just like the eight (uncontaminated karmas) mentioned earlier. The second part is divided into two points: refuting the fabricated extremes, and establishing the meaning of existence. The first point is: Some ancient Tibetans say that the meaning of not abandoning afflictions is that bodhisattvas need to take birth in samsara in order to benefit sentient beings, and taking birth also requires afflictions as the cause, so they keep afflictions like roots and shoots. Aduladasha said: Afflictions are suffering.

Generating suffering, and creating obstacles to the arising of antidotes, as well as taking rebirth, and having the power to generate its own kind, these are the four. Among them, if it is thought that the first two should be abandoned and the latter two not relinquished. Then, by what does a Hearer abandon that? If it is said that it is through familiarizing oneself with the selflessness of the person, which is contrary to the root of affliction, ignorance, and clinging. Then, a Bodhisattva also familiarizes himself with the selflessness of phenomena on top of that, and even if he wants to abide, he must abandon it, because a powerful antidote has been accomplished. Furthermore, the outflows that are explained as path-knowledge with outflows must also be considered as ignorance and craving, etc., so the Buddha must also have them, because path-knowledge does not abandon them in all aspects, and there is no other antidote. Furthermore, if taking rebirth requires causes such as ignorance and craving, then how do Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Arhats who have entered the Great Vehicle hold onto existence? If it is said that it is through the ground of ignorance's habitual imprints and stainless karma. Then, where does that go for Bodhisattvas? Therefore, that of a Bodhisattva is compassion and aspiration and the roots of virtue such as the generation of the mind of enlightenment, and that is also established there because it has the same function as afflictions, as said by the wise Jamyang Yeshe of the past. "Although it appears to be an explanation that understands the key points of the sutras and tantras, later generations have not understood it as a good explanation." It can also be said like this: If the cause of that birth is said to be the nature of affliction, then it would follow that the noble Bodhisattvas are born under the control of karma, and after taking birth, they would be harmed by the suffering of that path and that path, which is also unreasonable. As it says in the Uttaratantra: "The noble ones have completely abandoned the roots of death and old age, and the suffering of illness. Born by the power of karma and affliction, because that is absent in them, this is also absent." And in the commentary it also says: "Samsara is considered here to be the image of the three realms in the stainless realm. That is samsara because it is manifestly accumulated by the stainless, and it is also Nirvana because it is not manifestly accumulated by karma and affliction with outflows." And so on. Furthermore, it is taught in the Sutra of the Ocean of Intelligence. Pages 673 to 700.
