There are also two situations: Some Shravakas, without distinguishing between realms and grounds, but combining them and meditating on the selflessness of persons, thereby simultaneously abandoning the small, medium, and large afflictions of the three realms; distinguishing them and gradually meditating on each ground, thereby gradually abandoning them. In this way, two methods were taught, but for the Mahayana, the different characteristics were not clearly explained. However, in the Compendium of Topics, if asked what kind of attention is used to abandon, the answer is: focusing on the mixture, that is, the so-called "all dharmas are without self." Whatever form of impermanence, etc., is the form that completely tames selflessness. Like this, according to the simultaneous aspect, abandoning by focusing on the mixture or combination of attending to all dharmas as selfless is said to be abandoning by worldly paths, merely abandoning by symbols or names. Therefore, abandoning by means of the aspects of tranquility and coarseness is nominalism; abandoning by means of the aspect of selflessness is spoken of in terms of the meaning manifested from its own characteristics. The second situation is: transcending the realms by means of the path with aspects of tranquility and coarseness, which is proclaimed in the Dhammapada Sutra and other scriptures. For those dull-witted beings who regard existence as a virtue and are unwilling to abandon it, they are temporarily unsuitable as vessels for teaching selflessness. In order to gradually guide them to the path of selflessness, skillfully preventing the manifestation of their attachment to those grounds by regarding the higher and higher grounds as superior, thereby making them not desire existence but desire to be free from existence, at that time the path of selflessness is taught. The previous path, not to mention completely eliminating the manifestation of afflictions in those grounds, merely disparaging the view of superiority arising from attachment to those grounds, cannot prevent the manifestation of attachment. Because attachment to self and what belongs to self will manifest in the same continuum and at the same time as that path, and it will not harm the cause of that path—attachment to self and what belongs to self. Therefore, in the ultimate sense, even if one has attained the mind of the higher ground, it is not necessarily necessary to eliminate all the manifestations of afflictions of the lower ground. Just as one obtains the mind of the higher ground on the basis of the lower ground, just like the afflictions of this life. Furthermore, in order to destroy what is to be abandoned by seeing, it is necessary to generate in the continuum the path with the aspect of truth, because it is by seeing the truth that one abandons. Therefore.

So, how does that path eliminate the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing in the lower realms? The Abhidharmakośa states, "By superior birth, seeing and meditation, two." This means that the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, except for the peak of existence, are abandoned by the path of seeing and the worldly path of meditation. This is not contradictory, because it is established by the Vaibhāṣikas, and therefore it is also refuted by the Second Buddha (Dharmakīrti). Thus, having the aspect of quiescence and coarseness is merely making the continuum suitable as a vessel, while the path that liberates the three vehicles from afflictions is one that has the aspect of selflessness. That is, contemplating the emptiness of the self of a person contradicts ignorance and the object of true clinging, and therefore it has the power to destroy the faults arising from ignorance. As the Pramāṇavārttika states, "Because the view of emptiness contradicts it, all faults of its nature are thoroughly established as contradictory." And, "Liberation comes from the view of emptiness, the remaining meditations are for that purpose." That is how it is. Therefore, both manifest and latent afflictions should be known to be abandoned by the mental engagement of faith in the selflessness of the person and the mental engagement of suchness. This classification should not be thought to contradict the ways of abandoning the objects to be abandoned that were previously taught in the chapters on the self of a person and on dhyāna and the formless absorptions, because those were explained according to the literal meaning of what is stated in the Abhidharma, and not by analyzing where the intention lies. Third, there are three parts: examining whether abandonment is gradual or simultaneous, the nature and time of what is to be abandoned, and what the meaning of having abandoned and liberated is. First, there are two parts: stating the views of others, and contemplating the views of one's own school. The first is: Nyima Drakpa believes that if the nine qualities to be abandoned by the path of meditation of the path of knowledge arise before the worldly path, then all except those to be abandoned at the peak of existence are abandoned before the path of seeing, and that the nine afflictions from the desire realm to the peak of existence are gradually abandoned by the supramundane path of meditation. In the Tuktigong also, it is believed that the nine qualities to be abandoned in the desire realm are abandoned by the nine grounds that have become the nature of the path of meditation, and that the nine sets of qualities to be abandoned in the form and formless realms are gradually abandoned by those gathered by the ten grounds of the special path that has become the nature of the pure path of meditation, and this is also explained as the intention of the noble ones. The great master, on the other hand:
