Some consider valid cognition to be threefold, while some Madhyamikas explain it as four: direct perception, inference, scriptural testimony, and approximation. However, according to their system, they do not assert any other valid cognition that is not included in direct perception and inference. Therefore, to wrongly conceive that the basis to which the definition of valid cognition applies is more or less than the two, direct perception and inference, is also a mistaken notion. By skillfully dispelling this mistaken notion through methods that eliminate mistaken notions about the object of valid cognition, and by establishing the definite number of valid cognitions and objects of valid cognition, the meaning of the definition of valid cognition also becomes a method for realizing purity. This is extensively explained from "objects of cognition are two" to "not memory, not non-memory, therefore confusion." Eliminating mistaken notions about one's own nature is twofold. Eliminating mistaken notions about the nature of inference has already been explained in the first chapter due to necessity. Regarding eliminating mistaken notions about the nature of direct perception, many other schools, although they establish the existence of sense consciousnesses such as eye consciousnesses that apprehend forms, impute them as being conceptual. Therefore, to dispel their mistaken notions, such as "direct perception is free from conceptuality," and all other schools and some Śrāvakayāna schools of our own also mistakenly believe that there is no mental direct perception other than sense consciousnesses, so to dispel that, such as "previous experience is apprehension." The belief that there is no self-awareness direct perception is a mistaken notion about the nature of self-awareness direct perception. Regarding this, non-Buddhists such as the Vaiśeṣikas and Sāṃkhyas believe that there is no self-awareness because pleasure and so on are not consciousness, while the Vaiśeṣikas and others believe that although it is consciousness, they believe that there is no self-awareness because the aspect of the object does not appear to the mind. The refutation of the latter will be explained below, because refuting the mistaken notion that obstructs the realization of the valid cognition and its result and performing the refutation are the same thing. The refutation of the former, in this section on eliminating mistaken notions about nature, is explained by "pleasure and so on, the self-nature does not depend on others," and so on. In addition, because all the observers and so on possess attachment and so on, they cannot see the meaning that transcends the senses, thus slandering yogic direct perception, and refuting this mistaken notion, such as "yogic consciousness has been explained before."

Etc. Eliminating the distinctions that mistake non-perception for perception, and establishing apparent perception in order to mark the wrong path of true perception. There are four types of apparent perception, etc. The reason for establishing validity is that by relying on it, one can understand well the method of measuring objects, and by relying on it, one can distinguish between meaningful and meaningless. Therefore, the elimination of the illusion of the fruit produced by the way validity measures objects, and its accompanying content, is that it can accomplish actions, from there to the end of "If it is eliminated, this action will be eliminated." The subdivisions of these contents will be explained in their respective chapters. Now, let's explain the reason for presenting the collection of treatises in this order. That is, if one understands by eliminating the illusion of the nature of validity and the object to be measured, one will not know by what means validity determines the object to be measured. Just as one does not understand the way an axe cuts wood without first understanding the axe and the wood. Therefore, the way to eliminate the illusion of validity and its object has been explained earlier, and then at the end, the way to eliminate the illusion of validity and its fruit has been explained. For validity, if one does not understand the nature of the basis of classification, one cannot correctly understand the classification, so one must first understand the nature of the basis of classification - validity. This has already been explained in the second chapter. For classification, if one does not first understand the determination of the number of classifications, one cannot understand the nature of each classification, so the elimination of the illusion of number has been explained earlier. The number of validities depends on the number of objects to be measured, so the elimination of the illusion of objects is also explained at that time. For the nature of each classification, among perception and inference, inference has already been explained in the first chapter due to necessity. In perception, among the two types of self-nature and imputation, because there is more to be explained, the true perception is explained earlier and the similar perception is explained later in the order of superiority and inferiority. In true perception, among the two types of common perception of all ordinary beings and noble ones, and the perception of only noble ones, because there is more to be explained, and before the production of uncommon validity, the common validity must be produced first, so the common perception is explained earlier, and the yoga perception is explained later. In common perception, the knowable
