In this tradition of the noble ones, those who abide in the two vehicles are not distinguished by whether or not they possess the wisdom that realizes the profound suchness. Although the root text of wisdom (Mūlamadhyamakakārikā) does not explain the characteristics of the vast Mahāyāna, except for the profound aspect, this treatise is written from the perspective of the Mahāyāna among the two vehicles, the great and the small. Because the selflessness of phenomena is extensively explained through limitless reasoning, this is entirely for the sake of the disciples of the Mahāyāna, and the root text of wisdom also explains it in the same way. In its own commentary, it also says: It is reasonable to explain the Mahāyāna in order to clarify the selflessness of phenomena, because one wants to express the extensive explanation. In the vehicle of the Śrāvakas, the selflessness of phenomena is only briefly mentioned. This is very clear and will be explained below. In this way, if the vast path of the Mahāyāna, which is explained in that treatise, is supplemented by the instructions of the noble ones, it would be very good. To supplement this, one needs to rely on the three dharmas of the ordinary ground, the ten grounds of the noble learners, the ground of fruition, and the order of the fifth and sixth grounds, based on the nature of meditative quiescence (śamatha), and cultivate insight (vipaśyanā) by examining the suchness of the two selflessnesses with the wisdom that discriminates them individually. Therefore, when contemplating the meaning of the root text of wisdom, if one remembers these things mentioned in the "Entering the Middle Way" (Madhyamakāvatāra) and does not generate the thought of the stages of the path that combines both the profound and the vast, then that person has lost the two necessary purposes of composing the "Entering the Middle Way." Therefore, relying on this treatise to enter the path of the root text of wisdom from the vast perspective is the second way of entering the Middle Way. The second is that it is easy to understand the meaning of the words. Paying homage to Mañjuśrī, because this treatise is a manifestation of the ultimate truth of the Dharma, and the training in wisdom is the main focus, it is done in accordance with the previous decree. The third part has four points: the method of entering the composition of the treatise, which is praise; the actual body of the composed treatise; the way in which the treatise was composed; and the dedication of the merit of composing the treatise. The first part has two points: praising great compassion without distinguishing it, and praising great compassion by distinguishing it.

Homage. Firstly, in order to enter the Madhyamaka treatises, the venerable Chandra wishes to compose 'Entering the Middle Way'. Unlike other treatises, he does not make the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas the objects of praise. Moreover, among the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, he first praises the Bhagavati, who is the complete cause of Buddhahood, who has the characteristic of completely protecting all helpless beings bound in the prison of samsara, and who is named after the fruit because she is the chief of causes. In order to show that she is worthy of being praised as the Great Compassionate One, he speaks of the two verses beginning with 'Shravakas'. There are two aspects here: first, it shows compassion as the main cause of Bodhisattvas; second, it shows the root of the other two causes of Bodhisattvas. The first aspect has three points: first, how Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas arise from the Powerful One; second, how Buddhas arise from Bodhisattvas; and third, it shows the three main causes of Bodhisattvas. The first point is: having heard the correct instructions from others, and having attained the fruit of Shravaka Bodhi through meditation, because one conveys that meaning to others, one is called a Shravaka. The way of conveying is, 'Thus, the deed has been done. From this, one does not know other existences,' and so on, as often appears in the scriptures. Although this etymological explanation does not apply to some Shravakas in the formless realm, there is no fault, because when sound is used as a name, there is a reason for etymological explanation, so it is not pervasive. For example, just as a lotus that grows on land is called a lotus born from the sea. Or, if according to the Sanskrit word for Shravaka (śrāvaka, श्रಾವक, Sravaka, listener) also means hearing and proclaiming, then having heard from the Buddhas, and proclaiming to those who have the lineage of the Great Vehicle and take that path seriously, one is called a Shravaka. As it is said in the 'White Lotus Sutra': 'Lord, today we have become Shravakas, we will truly proclaim the supreme Bodhi, and we will also praise the sound of Bodhi, therefore we are like fearless Shravakas.' These two reasons are reasons similar to Shravakas for Bodhisattvas, while for Shravakas, they are the actual meanings of hearing and proclaiming. Some say that the third line does not have the word 'supreme'.
