This is an explanation of the reasons and examples for recognizing and expressing with the term "lack of inherent existence." The first is: Considering the three: the lack of inherent existence of characteristics, the lack of inherent existence of arising, and the lack of inherent existence of ultimate reality, it is said that all phenomena lack inherent existence. What are these three? They are the imputed, the dependent, and the thoroughly established. The second is: The reason for expressing the imputed with the term "lack of inherent existence of characteristics" is that it is merely established by names and concepts, because it is not established as its own characteristic. The reason for expressing the dependent with the term "lack of inherent existence of arising" is that it arises from the power of other conditions, because it does not have the nature of arising from itself. The lack of inherent existence of ultimate reality is explained in relation to the dependent and also in relation to the thoroughly established. The first is: Because the object that, when realized, liberates from obscurations is a completely pure object, therefore, the pure object is called ultimate reality. Because the dependent is not established there, the dependent is also called the lack of inherent existence of ultimate reality, because focusing on it increases all afflictions, and it is also a conventional truth of designation. The thoroughly established is also ultimate reality. Because it is unnecessary, it is called the lack of inherent existence of ultimate reality. For example, just as a flower in the sky does not exist in reality, so is the imputed. The dependent is like an illusion, For the consciousness that perceives duality, although it appears as if the external object is cut off, it is like an illusion because it is not established in the external object, but it is not an illusion of the aggregation of true appearance and true emptiness. The thoroughly established is explained by the example of space that blocks obstructive form. The second is because the imputed lacks inherent existence, so it is added that it is unborn by inherent existence. For the dependent, it is added that it is not born as its own nature. This explains that when the Prajnaparamita Sutra speaks of the lack of inherent existence, it refers to the imputed and the dependent, but the thoroughly established is truly existent, which is the view of the master Asanga, and this wrong view is also eliminated, because all three inherent existences are said to be the basis of consideration, and both the dependent and the thoroughly established are said to be established by their own characteristics.

Third, children, due to their attachment to the appearance of the completely imputed nature as true, as it is conceptually established on the basis of the perfected nature that is devoid of other-poweredness and self, thus they wander in samsara. In order to be liberated from samsara, first, the arising of other-poweredness is shown to be without inherent existence, thereby causing one to become disillusioned with existence. Then, the characteristics of the completely imputed are shown to be without inherent existence, and the ultimate reality of the perfected is shown to be without inherent existence, thereby causing one to be liberated from existence. Considering that the path of realizing the selflessness of persons and the fruit of liberation are not different in all three vehicles, it is said to be one vehicle. However, it is not the case that it is ultimately determined to be only the Great Vehicle, because by nature, the faculties are definitely sharp, medium, and dull, so the Hearers who only practice tranquility will never be able to attain Buddhahood. Third, the meaning of asking for an answer is: The Bodhisattva, the truly noble one, taught that the meaning of these three natures should be understood as follows: That is, all phenomena from form to omniscience are completely imputed by conceptualizing their nature and differences. The basis for establishing them in this way is the other-powered consciousness of dualistic appearance, and the perfected nature is said to be empty of the two selves. Therefore, what is said to be established by its own characteristics is the other-powered and the perfected. What is not established by its own characteristics is the completely imputed. Moreover, the other-powered and the perfected are also said to be the intention of the non-inherent existence of names. Therefore, the manner of the existence or non-existence of inherent existence should be understood in this way in all sutras. Fourth, first, in the Deer Park where the sage speaks, for those who have truly entered the Hearer Vehicle, the statement that all phenomena are established by their own characteristics is not according to the literal meaning. The statement in the middle that all phenomena are without inherent existence is also not according to the literal meaning. What is it then? In this Sutra Elucidation of the Thought, for those who have truly entered all vehicles, it is said that the completely imputed is not established by its own characteristics, while the other-powered and the perfected are established by their own characteristics. The intention of existence and non-existence is well distinguished and shown, and well differentiated.
