If it is said that I (referring to the opponent) believe that things that have already arisen still have the function of arising, and call the cause that has a function and the coexistent cause "the cause that has a function," then, apart from the Vaibhashika school, our own school (Madhyamaka) believes that the result has already arisen, and there is no need for it to be produced by a cause again, but it believes that the result that has already arisen is produced by a cause; similarly, although there is no need to rely on a cause again, the result that has already arisen is dependent on the cause, so it relies on the cause. Only this point is also admitted by our own school, the difference being that if a self-established thing is produced by a cause, there will be faults such as having to be produced again after it has already been produced, so in the Buddhapalita and Prasannapada, the word "also" is used in the case of "existing things do not need conditions." These two lines of reasoning appear many times, so in other situations, it should be understood as said here. Second, divided into four parts: refuting the definition of the causal condition; refuting the definition of the objective condition; refuting the definition of the immediate condition; refuting the definition of the dominant condition. The first part is: things are established by definition, and the cause is the establisher. Because the definition of the causal condition is also said in this way, if the definition exists, then does the causal condition exist by its own nature? If this definition is ultimately existent, then the causal condition is also ultimately existent, which is also reasonable. When examining whether the dharma of the result exists, does not exist, or both exist in the causal stage, if the cause cannot establish the result, then how can it be said that the definition that has the function of establishing is the definition of the causal condition that exists by its own nature? It cannot be said like that. If this is the case, then it is unreasonable to say that because the definition of the causal condition exists, the causal condition is ultimately existent. This reasoning has been said before, but now I will say what is said in the Buddhapalita: if the result already exists in the causal stage, then the production of the result by the cause is meaningless and will fall into infinite fault; if the sprout, etc., which does not exist in the causal stage, is produced by the cause, then just like it does not exist in the causal stage, the sprout will be produced, but the rabbit's horn will not be produced, which is unreasonable. Because a self-established thing does not exist at any time, it cannot be distinguished by saying, "This is the cause of this," "This is not the cause of this."

Therefore. Neither existence nor non-existence can be established for the cause in time. Because they are mutually contradictory, there is no single meaning, and it would become two faults. The second case is: the object of the condition exists by its own nature, because it has become the basis of things like consciousness. If so, does the object of the condition depend on the consciousness that exists before the object, or does it depend on the non-existent consciousness? For things that already exist before the object, there is no need for the object of the condition. If the object of the condition is falsely established in order to generate that dharma, then that dharma already exists before the object. If so, if the self-nature of the dharma is completely established without relying on the object, then what is the use of examining whether this dharma has an object? Therefore, existing dharmas, such as mind, etc., you are merely, according to your own wishes, saying that things that have no object at all are said to have an object, which is only an approximate indication, but in reality it has no connection with the object. If the object depends on the consciousness that does not exist before the object, then in this case, the non-existent consciousness has no connection with the cause of the object. Because when the object exists, the subject does not exist; when the subject exists, the object does not exist. Although it cannot be denied that there is a connection in name, here it is to prevent the statement that the cause of the object is established in the ultimate sense. Therefore, it is possible to prevent the connection in the ultimate sense. If the connection is established in the ultimate sense, then it must be established as the reality of the two dharmas, and the reality will never confuse its own dharma, so it applies at any time and place. If so, then the dharma of the result, mind and mental factors, is without an object, and you are merely approximately saying that non-existent things have an object. Changing what existed before into what exists now, this is the case of preventing non-existent things from being the cause of the object, please think about it. Except for this difference, the front and back parts of the two verses are the same, only the two "if" statements are different. The Prajñāpradīpa says that the dharmas such as eye consciousness are actually shown to have no object, so it is said to be an approximate indication, so the word "only" exists in the scripture. Therefore, the dharma that can be objectified, the object is before the object
