By the power of good destinies, like a flash of lightning, one comes again and again, enjoying much happiness, and after death falls into evil destinies, enduring harsh, hot, and unpleasant sufferings. For a long time, for endless eons, one falls into unbearable great hells. One must experience endless suffering, so one should contemplate the faults of evil destinies. To contemplate the common faults of existence in general: In the realms of desire, form, and formlessness, there are very many cliffs of suffering, and the reason for not being able to escape from them is that in those realms, one does not comprehend the sole method of liberation from suffering, but is bound by the noose of craving. In such a situation, due to mutual contradiction, if one does not comprehend the sole truth, one contradicts the cause of liberation, falsely clinging to things as real, and ultimately one only revolves in samsara. In samsaric existence, one does not have such comprehension, so in that existence, one will also experience an incomparable, inexhaustible ocean of suffering that is beyond measure, so it is appropriate to strive to realize emptiness. Third, even if one is born in a good destiny in that existence, the power to accumulate merit is small, and now the support for accumulating merit—the leisure and fortune of human life—is also short-lived. Even when one stays there for a short time, one takes measures such as bathing and massaging to hope to live long, and one takes medicine and so on as a cause of health. One is also afflicted by hunger, the fatigue of the road, sleep, and various internal and external harms. Similarly, associating with children who are bad friends, and so on, one has no time to practice Dharma meaninglessly, and this life passes quickly and frighteningly without meaning. Therefore, it is extremely difficult to discern the sole cause of transcending existence, so one should strive for a method of escaping from samsara. Fourth, if one is born in a good destiny, is it enough to escape from samsara by meditating on the meaning of emptiness? In samsara, clinging to things as appearing real, and the habits of distraction such as busyness, have been habitual from beginningless time, so it is very difficult to reverse them. So where is the method to reverse them? The favorable

Because favorable conditions are extremely rare, and adverse conditions and harms are extremely numerous. Even when slightly practicing the sacred Dharma, the sons of gods and demons, etc., strive to hinder it, therefore, there are many obstacles to liberation from samsara, and they are difficult to overcome. If one is born in a good rebirth, can't one easily attain liberation from samsara by generating faith in the truth and the Three Jewels, etc., and practicing meditation, etc.? Even when one is born in a good rebirth, there are extremely many wrong paths that fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation, which are contrary to the correct view, and evil teachers lead them into these paths. Even doubt about the correct path is difficult to overcome, because the internal and external causes for cutting off doubt are difficult to find. If one does not find it in this life, is it sufficient to seek a virtuous friend and practice in future lives? If one does not strive to find a virtuous friend in this life, it will be difficult to find leisure again in future lives, and it is extremely rare for a Buddha to appear in the world. Meeting a virtuous friend is also extremely difficult. Even if one meets a virtuous friend and obtains a good support of leisure and endowment, if one does not strive well with mindfulness, it is difficult to abandon the river of afflictions, because it flows continuously until liberation is attained. "Ema" means discouragement and sadness, because suffering continues from one to another, so it is very painful. Even if one is liberated from one suffering, one will fall into another suffering again. Therefore, when one obtains leisure and endowment, one should strive to contemplate the faults of samsara. Fifth, although it is extremely painful, one regards suffering as happiness, and does not see oneself drowning in suffering. For these beings who are in the river of suffering, with compassion, one wishes that they could be free from suffering. In this way, one should feel compassion for beings who are drowning in the mud of suffering, and strive to cultivate great compassion. For example, some non-Buddhists who are deceived by false teachers repeatedly bathe and repeatedly enter fire. Although their bodies are extremely painful due to the torment of asceticism, they think that this is a method for attaining liberation.
