Even if one clings to the basis as being established by ultimate truth or its own characteristic, it is the same as clinging to the place designated by name as being established by its own characteristic. For those who do not understand the designation "What is this name?", there are also affirmations to be negated, and the reasoning for preventing them is also the same. In the *Yogacarabhumi-sastra*, if a thing exists before and is later named "What is this?", then when it is not named, the essence of that thing will not exist. If the essence exists even when it is not named, and it is named later, then at the time when it is not named, the thought "This is form" will arise, which is prohibited. If the actual object to which the designation is applied is clung to as the essence of that thing established by its own characteristic, then even if the designation is not applied, there will be faults such as the arising of the thought of a name. However, if the thing that is the place for applying designations such as form and the object of clinging of conceptualization is clung to as being established by its own characteristic, it will not become such a fault. The Sravaka schools also say this. In this way, although form and other objects of clinging of conceptualization are the completely imputed established by name and designation, they cannot be refuted because they are established by valid cognition. And that very thing itself being established by its own characteristic is impossible for the knowable that is merely the completely imputed established by name, so there are two cases for things established by name and designation: established by valid cognition and not established by valid cognition. However, it is merely established by name and designation. Hereafter, it is believed that cause and effect are not permissible for it. If the two proponents of meaning deny that form and other objects of clinging of conceptualization and places for applying designations are established by their own characteristic, then they will not know how to establish the existence of these things, which is not a tenet known to the Pramanikas. For example, the absence of a pot is a non-affirming negation, and although it and the place are included in the same basis, the two, non-affirming negation and thing, do not prevent being contradictory. Similarly, the consciousness that is the object of clinging of conceptualization is a completely imputed that is not established by ultimate truth, and the two, consciousness established by ultimate truth, are not contradictory either. Therefore, although the sutra "Name is made by whom and what?" and so on is a sutra established for the Sravaka schools, there is no difference in meaning from what they say. For example, in the Agama of the Mahasamghika school, the "root consciousness" is mentioned, which is like their explanation of the alaya-consciousness. Clinging to the previously explained essence and difference as existing by their own characteristic or ultimate truth is the main obscuration of knowledge.
