The way of doing so. First, there are nine. Focusing the mind on this and that, constantly focusing, intermittently focusing, closely focusing, taming, pacifying, extremely pacifying, focusing on one point, and focusing equally. The measure of achieving calm abiding through meditation is threefold: showing the boundary between achieving calm abiding and not achieving it, generally showing how to progress on the path based on calm abiding, and especially showing how to progress on the worldly path. The first has two: showing the actual meaning, and contemplating with attention. Third, especially showing how to progress on the worldly path has two: showing that calm abiding must be attained before progressing on the path with aspects of quiescence and agitation, and how to become free from attachment to desire based on calm abiding. Second, there are four ways to train in insight: showing the accumulation of insight, the distinctions of insight, the way to meditate on insight, and for the sake of achieving insight through meditation. The first has three: distinguishing between definitive and provisional statements, how Nagarjuna's intention was explained, and how to establish the view of emptiness. This has two: the order of entering into suchness, and actually establishing suchness. This has three: identifying the object to be refuted by reasoning, whether that refutation is done by consequentialism or autonomy, and how the view arises in the mind based on that action. The first has three: the reason why the object to be refuted must be well ascertained, refuting the other's system of refuting without ascertaining the object to be refuted, and the way of identifying the object to be refuted in one's own system. Second, there are two ways to refute the other's system of refuting without ascertaining the object to be refuted: refuting the determination of the object to be refuted as being too broad, and refuting the determination of the object to be refuted as being too narrow. The first has two: stating the assertion, and showing that it is unreasonable. This has two: showing that that system prevents the uncommon characteristics of Madhyamaka, and showing that the stated harms cannot be established. The first has three: identifying the characteristics of Madhyamaka, how that system prevents it, and how the Madhyamikas respond to it. Second, there are four ways to show that the stated harms cannot be established: whether or not it can withstand rational scrutiny.
