Since (the Guru) urges from within, in order to generate it, meditate on the aspects of leisure and endowment. Then, if the mind seeking this life does not turn away, a strong seeking for the next life will not arise. Therefore, strive to meditate on impermanence, that obtaining a body does not last long, and on the way of wandering in the lower realms after death. At that time, since a genuine mind of remembering fear arises, generate certainty from the depths of your heart in the qualities of the Three Jewels, abide in the common refuge vows, and train in its precepts. Then, as the basis of all white dharmas, generate faith in the belief in karma and its results from many aspects, and make it firm, striving to adopt virtue and abandon non-virtue, and constantly enter the path of the four powers. In this way, when the dharma topics of the small person are complete, contemplate extensively the faults of samsara in general and in particular, and turn the mind away from samsara in general as much as possible. Then, identify the afflictions as the cause from which samsara arises, and generate the unfeigned desire to abandon them. The path of liberation from samsara is, in general, the three trainings, and in particular, strive in the individual liberation vows that you have taken. In this way, when the dharma topics of the intermediate person are complete, contemplate how you are like someone who has fallen into the ocean, and similarly, all other beings are also like that, cultivate the mind of enlightenment with love and compassion as its root, and strive to generate it. If there is no bodhicitta, then practicing the six perfections and the two stages, etc., is like building a house on a foundationless ground. Regarding this, if a slight experience arises, take hold of it with a ceremony and strive to train in its precepts, and make the aspiration mind as stable as possible. Then, listen to the vast practices, understand the boundaries of what to adopt and abandon, and generate the desire to train in them. When this desire arises, take hold of the engaging vows with a ceremony, and train in the six perfections that ripen your own mindstream, and the four ways of gathering that ripen the mindstreams of others, etc. In particular, for the root downfalls, protect them at the cost of your life. Strive not to be stained by minor, intermediate, and transgressions. Even if stained, strive to purify them. Then, since it is necessary to particularly train in the last two perfections, become skilled in the way of cultivating meditative stabilization, and accomplish samadhi. Strive to generate a pure view of the two selflessnesses in your mindstream, place it on top of what you have gained and seen, understand the way of cultivating it, and cultivate it. Such a

These are the names given to the two, Śamatha and Vipaśyanā, as 'calm abiding' and 'insight'. Since there is nothing apart from these two, one should take the bodhisattva vows and learn from their precepts. Also, it is not possible to attain the higher path without cultivating the lower path, and one should have an increasing desire to cultivate the lower path when listening to the higher path. When cultivating these, one should also tame conceptual thoughts through cultivation and balance the mind. Like this, if one seems to have little respect for the spiritual friend who guides the path, one should strive to rely on them properly, as they explain the root of complete goodness. Similarly, if one has little enthusiasm for practice, one should contemplate the freedoms and advantages; if one is too attached to this life, one should mainly cultivate impermanence and the faults of the lower realms. If one seems to be neglecting the vows one has taken, one should mainly cultivate the law of karma. If one has little renunciation for samsara, then seeking liberation becomes mere words, so one should contemplate the faults of samsara. If one does not strongly think of benefiting sentient beings in whatever one does, then the root of the Great Vehicle is severed, so one should cultivate aspirational bodhicitta along with its causes. Having taken the bodhisattva vows, when learning the conduct, if the bondage of clinging to characteristics seems very strong, one should destroy the object of clinging to characteristics with reasoning and cultivate emptiness like the sky and like an illusion. If the mind does not stay on the object of focus and seems to become a slave to distraction, then the superiors say that one should mainly cultivate single-pointedness. By extrapolating from these, one should also understand what has not been said. In short, one should not be biased towards one side, but one's mind should be able to be used for all aspects of virtue. Secondly, the way to particularly train in the Vajrayana is: Like this, after training in the common paths of both Sutra and Tantra, one must enter mantra without hesitation, because this path is rarer than other dharmas, and because it quickly perfects the two accumulations. If one enters mantra, then as stated in the Lamp for the Path, one must first please the guru even more diligently than previously stated, that is, one must do so for a guru who possesses all the qualities mentioned therein. Then, one must first ripen one's mindstream with an empowerment explained in the original tantra. Then, one must listen to and understand the vows and commitments taken at that time.
