Now, the reason it is needed is, as stated in the Four Hundred Verses: "Even when anger is possessed by spirits, the doctor is not agitated. Similarly, the Buddha sees afflictions as enemies, but is not angry with beings connected to afflictions." Furthermore, Master Chandrakirti also said: "Here, sentient beings are not the fault, but these afflictions are the fault. Having thoroughly analyzed, the wise do not become angry with sentient beings." It is like that. Moreover, experiencing suffering caused by harm is experiencing the result of one's own previously accumulated negative karma, and relying on it, that karma will be exhausted. If one cultivates patience towards it, then one will not newly accumulate the cause of experiencing suffering in the future. If one becomes angry, then one must experience even greater suffering than that. Therefore, just as bloodletting and cauterization are done as a means of curing a great illness, it is very reasonable to endure small sufferings in order to avert great sufferings. The method of cultivating patience in accepting suffering is: if the suffering that has arisen can be rectified again, then there is no need to be displeased. If it cannot be rectified, then being displeased is of no use, there is no necessity, and there are also faults. If attachment is great, then even small sufferings are very difficult to endure. If attachment is small, then even great sufferings can be endured. The method of embracing suffering with the mind is as follows: if there were no suffering, the desire to definitely escape from samsara would not arise, therefore, there is the virtue of urging towards liberation. If one is struck by suffering, there is the virtue of destroying pride by destroying what is tall due to arrogance, and eliminating conceit. If one experiences intense feelings of suffering, it arises from non-virtue, so if one does not want that result, one must turn away from the cause, therefore, there is the virtue of avoiding sin. Being tormented by suffering is because one desires happiness, so if one needs happiness, one must perform virtue, therefore, there is the virtue of delighting in performing virtue. Considering one's own experience, and thinking that others are also suffering, compassion arises for beings in samsara. Knowing this, one should repeatedly train the mind, thinking that this suffering is a desired place. That is, "There is nothing that does not become easy with habituation. Therefore, by habituating oneself to small harms, one should also endure great harms." Like that, one should understand the meaning of the thought of accepting suffering.
